Plane forced to emergency land, hole in floor

A Qantas passenger plane travelling from London to Melbourne had to make an emergency landing after a massive hole formed in the plane's undercarriage.

The Boeing 747-400, carrying 346 passengers and 19 staff had to divert to Manila where it landed safely with no reported injuries.

Unsurprisingly, an airport official said "passengers looked scared and some were sick."

Wouldn't you be if a hole formed in the plane that was carrying you 30,000ft above a big ocean?

  • That photo is just terrifying. How can something like this happen and, moreover, how did the pilot manage to land the plane safely considering the damage?

  • I tell you, these people were taking somthin out to get fuel millage. These airlines take desrate measures to save be cause of this global warming stuff, and its really taking a toll on these people. Why fly the Jumbo Jet if the floor mysterly gives way because they took components out the plane anyway?

    i would love to just like tie my self up and jump throught the hole.... its like a bungy jump and except it constant at like 350 mph....

  • It was good the plane was over the sea when this happen. Where is security!? It all costs more, will they tell you they will cut costs on Security and Maintenance?

  • I wonder if some lucky soul found a perfectly packed suitcase full of holiday fun that landed in their garden? Seriously though, this is scary stuff. How old must these planes be for giant chunks to fall out of them?

  • Let me get this straight -- 17 y/o aircraft has a failure in a high stress area of the aircraft, and the engineers who have staged strikes several times THIS year say it proves they're not paid enough? Hmm...just how do THOSE two relate to one another? They've been doing shoddy engineering for 17 years and it finally caught up with them? Believe I wouldn't want to start down THAT line of thinking. This is the same aircraft company that wants to build new tankers for the USAF and other Allied air forces around the world? Believe that's ANOTHER line of thinking I would abandon fast! Maybe they should concentrate on the present job before bidding on more they cannot handle. :)
