Russia is said to be considering the use of bases in Cuba as a refuelling point for its nuclear bombers, in a move reminiscent of the 1962 missile crisis.
The move would be in retaliation for the Bush administration's plan to site a missile defence shield in Europe. Russia says America's proposal for the shield in Poland and the Czech Republic poses a direct threat to its security.
Citing a "highly placed military source", a report in Monday's Izvestiya said the Kremlin wanted to use Cuba as a base for its long-range Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic nuclear bombers. "While they are deploying the anti-missile systems in Poland and the Czech Republic, our long-range strategic aircraft already will be landing in Cuba," the source told the paper. No final decision on landing bombers in Cuba had been taken, it added.

'Russia is hacked off with Bush'
In 1962 Nikita Khrushchev, Russia's then leader, attempted to site nuclear missiles on the Caribbean island. His aim was to lessen the then strategic nuclear gap with the US. He eventually backed down and withdrew the missiles. The US secretly removed its missiles from Turkey.
Izvestiya is owned by Russia's state gas giant Gazprom and reflects official thinking. It is frequently used by the Kremlin as a vehicle for leaking information. The possible use of Cuba as a nuclear base dominated yesterday's Russian newspapers. Komsomolskaya Pravda said "our bombers" could be stationed under America's "belly", threatening the US in the same way it threatens Russia.
But Russia's defence ministry poured cold water on the report yesterday. "Russia, guided by its peaceful policy, is not creating military bases at the borders of other states," Russian news agencies quoted Ilshat Baichurin, acting head of the defence ministry's information department, as saying.
US and European diplomats also played down the report, saying they did not regard the threat as realistic even though General Norton Schwartz, who has been nominated as the US air force commander, warned on Tuesday that such a move by Moscow would amount to crossing a dangerous threshold.
Russian defence analysts told the Guardian there was little strategic point in using Cuba as a base and the idea seemed to have been floated to irritate the US.
Russia's nuclear aircraft have a range of up to 1,900 miles, allowing them to fire a nuclear missile at the US from much further away than Cuba, defence expert Pavel Felgenhauer said.
It was unclear yesterday whether Cuba had agreed to Russia's proposal. In a brief note on a government website, Fidel Castro said his brother Raúl, Cuba's president, was wise not to respond to the report. Most observers believe that the president would be unlikely to agree to any request from Moscow.

I've been following the "misslie shield" news for awhile, and it seems only logical that the Russian's would want to do this. As much as I am an American, I can't deny another nation from feeling threatened, and doing something in return.
-
this means vodka is going to get cheaper,
how will this affect the tea in china. -
I am sure this will be played out to make Russia look like the devil, but It is no worse than the US putting a missle defense system in Poland. The biggest problem here is that the US are playing world police.
-
Then again, it will never stop. Rough times ahead again!!
-
Good we get to test out our F-22's on some live prey! Nothing against the Russians, any aggressor will do just fine.
-
Our armed forces are overseas and our national guard are guarding the oil the russian can walk right in and take over. Its better than what we have now.
-
Finally! I could hardly wait to see what was going to start World War 3. Wonder when China will chime in.
This is all irrelevant anyways, what about the satellites in orbit carrying missiles? Those pose as big a threat as Cuba yet nobody ever talks about it. Or, ICBMs that can traverse the planet.-

Why is it perfectly fine to do business with countries around the world but when it comes to military logic they are all considered threats or enemies?

It's about time that Russia worked to take back some of its ceded territories that were unfairly "sold" to the United States without the benefit of a referendum on the matter. The pressure that this will assert on the United States of America, a has been superpower that has proven that it can't flex its muscles without going bankrupt, might just be enough to put us out of business as the major proliferator of world terror and weapons of mass destruction.

There is nothing to this but empty threats... and both the US and Russian governments know this. The Russians need to make some noise on the International stage to give themselves some credibility. And the US knows this so they will give them some leeway.
They will never actually attempt to place bombers that close to the US. Here is why.
1. They do not have the equipment or resources to carry out even a limited campaign this far from their homeland ... while yes they can try it would have 0% chance of success. The US wouldn't even need ground forces to counter this. Just the reserve assets of the US Navy and Air Force on the east coast would be enough to prevent this.
2. The Russian military is roughly 1/3rd its size when compared to its pre '90's numbers. Not to mention that the majority of its equipment is about that old as well and technologically has not advanced as far as the US military has thru the 90's to present day. My point being is if push came to shove, Russia would not be able to bring forth the force that it would need to support any type of operation this far from their homeland. That is without resorting to a nuclear option. Which is a pretty safe bet that they are not willing to do?
3. The most important reason why this is just posturing and not a real threat is that if they were really serious about this ABM system that the US was installing then the more logical course of action would be to mass troops on the borders of the countries that we are installing these systems in.
At least that way they have a chance of really effecting a change in policy.-

Currently, this is the third night in a row that the Radio Havana short wave station is being jammed by the CIA or some contractor for the CIA. The Republicans obviously don't want to make this an issue because it shows the shortcomings of a president who has made an enemy out of everyone he has ever "touched." Bush has failed as a president and now John McClone wants to step in and continue the march towards a Fourth Reich. But Russia, a democratic dictatorship with a massive WMD stash is ready to take America's place as the only surviving superpower.
Bush sold our souls to his friends when the 9-11 fiasco opened up our treasury and closed down our 200 plus years of congressional oversight and common sense. Now Putin, a man who Bush "looked into his soul..." is now taking an agressive push to stop this whole crazy shield concept. The world should feel safer now that the purpetrators of the coup de'tat in both Haiti and the attempted coup in Venezuela will now be kept in check by a FREE and COMMUNIST CUBA!-
