A new scalpel called the PlasmaBlade has been given the greenlight for use in operating theatres in the US. The scalpel functions at low temperatures using pulses of plasma energy which both cut and cauterise at the same time, doing minimal damage to the surrounding tissues. It is hoped that this will minimise bleeding and scar formation in sugical proceedures.
