Christian protests may prevent more Phillip Pullman films

It now looks increasingly unlikely that sequels to last year's The Golden Compass will be made, amid "fervent Christian protests".

The first film, while successful in the UK, fell victim to boycotts from Christian groups in the US, leading to dissapointing takings.

As a fan of the books, I think this might be a good thing, although I'd like them to reach a larger audience somehow.

  • I'm sorry but the books were awesome...the movie was not....at all.

  • The movie was not all that great I'll admit. The books were amazing. My mother read them to my brother and I before all the hype about them took.

Both my mother and brother are christians and have no problem reading them at all. I don't see the reason why you should deny yourself a good read. I disagree with some christian beliefs and still found the bible a decent read.

I don't understand why the movies wouldn't be put out because a religious group disagrees with it. If that were true for every movie this group of christians disagreed with, well...things would be less creative and entertaining. I won't say that all christians feel the way these protestors feel, because I know quite a few christians who absolutely love this book.

  • I thought the movie was boring, even for children, whose audience it was meant to target.

  • Of all the problems Christianity is facing trying remain relevant in the 21st century, I don't think this is where they should be focusing their energy.

I saw the film (most of it. I fell asleep toward the end) and I don't see how it had anything to do with Christianity at all. I remember talking polar bears, witches and things of that nature.

If there was a scene wherein they made fun of Jesus, I missed it.

  • Overzealous christians have too much time on their hands.

  • wow, I wonder how christans will take to "Hamlet 2"? But still, I wanted to watch it because of the series end. And thats what all the christans were camplaining about in my school and myspace.

  • Here is another reason for me to laugh at those religious freaks. Ha-ha! Dumbasses.

  • how about we make a movie on all the people the christians have killed in the name of baby Jesus
to gain enough power to censor me and tell me what can or cannot see.

  • LOL, Christian boycotts didn't have anything to do with the "disappointing takings." The movie wasn't that great. Nice excuse for the movie makers though.

    Usually, Christian protests = publicity.

Didn't Christian groups also protest Harry Potter? Aren't they making Harry Potter 5 or something?

  • I'm not familiar with the books. Christian or Non-Christian the film was horrible. I can't believe someone even watched it. A sequel should never be made!

  • The main characters are DEMONS that KILL GOD.

We can't promote this to children.

  • Most Christians I know celebrate diversity in thought, entertainment and culture. The only types of Christians I have heard of that have protested this movie were radical groups of far-right conservatives who hardly speak for the majority of Christians. I would bet that millions of Christians saw this movie with their families, enjoyed it, and found no problems with it.
  • Maybe they didn't make near as much money as you think. It's money that decides if a movie is going to be made not whether someone hates it or not. DUH. ha.

  • Doesn't this remind anyone of the Harry Potter debate?

  • In my opinion, if you dont want to see the movie don't watch it... But don't prevent the rest of us from deciding whether to watch it or not based on your ideas and beliefs.

  • the first one was not great, but that doesn't mean the second one will be just as bad. People weren't a fan of the first hellboy, but the second one did well.

  • Christians aren't 'preventing' anything...rather, they are going about the business of participatory democracy that ENCOURAGES them to voice their objection over something they find offensive.

while you might have grounds to argue the movie/books aren't ACTUALLY offensive, as far as I can see people have no legitimate grounds to protest a protest. If you;re mad, you're mad at the democratic spirit.

  • I want to read the books. I wish I could kill God...

  • So $300million isn't enough for a film to be successful these days? Does every film have to be as popular as LoTR:RoTK, I Am Legend, Spiderman 3 or The Dark Knight for it to be worth anyone's time?

But yeah I was thoroughly disappointed by the film, it was soooo below the quality of the books (which I think are probably the best children's books ever written).
  • Yes, best books ever, and fuck any group that wants to complain, anyone can surely make movies about anything, isn't that the point of creative self-expression? Oh wait, I forgot, movies are only to dull our minds and make people too much money....?!

At this point the 1st movie did suck so bad I guess I don't really care anyway, but if they had done a better job that trilogy would have been awesome. They were definitely as good as Harry Potter and LOTR.... WAY better than C.S. Lewis...

  • Even if the film wasn't a travesty, and hadn't completely loost the spirit of the books, I find it very hard to believe that a Christian could feel OFFENDED by the theme of destroying authority over our souls.

OFFENSE is what I feel if someone calls me ugly, or insults one of my friends or family without knowing them: what they are feeling is fear, not offense.

  • Even though Christians will protest, there will not be a sequel anyway because it did so poorly.

  • Why can't people just mind their own damn business?Nobody's forcing any of these "christians" to watch anything they don't want to.Live and let live my ass!

  • Let me get this straight?

A movie doesn't do too well...base on a book written by an author who wants to bring the Catholic Church down and many can't believe it?

Sounds to me if both the market & God are traveling the same path here!

    Get over it!
  • Damn, I wanted to see what happens next and I have no time for reading honestly.

The thing that irked me about that whole movie was it was one gigantic tease for it's sequel/trilogy. No proper conclusion was reached of any sort. Just, see you next time! Even LOTR and Star Wars reach conclusions at the end of their respective individual movies, TGC just seemed to leave a gigantic plot hole.
...and now religious people want to ruin the entire part of the first movie, dammit!

  • the movie was not that great. i was watching a bootleg so i just assumed it sucked because of the crappy camera work and too many people going to the bathroom.

even though it was supposed to be this extremely blasphemous movie (which is why i watched it) i didn't get or see anything blasphemous at all. it just seemed like kids going against authority. it might as well be Matilda.

my parents refused to allow my little sisters to watch it. next time i babysit i'll bring better bootlegs

or i'll just skip that and buy them the books. if i bring home the northern lights they won't know it's the same thing

  • the christian right rears its ugly head once again and shows off ignorance and bigotry...
    unclepete
  • i think that reading something that criticizes your beliefs and then having a new perspective and more than likely remaining a christian makes you a better christian than putting your hands over your ears and others screaming ''LA LA LA LA''.

Makes me think of the violence in the Narnia films too.
    IKilledBambi
  • hey, if they made Bloodrayne 2 than anythings possible!
    the_taminator
  • I am a big fan of the literature as well. And although the movie was a bit of a disappointment it is always interesting to see someones visual take of the words that entranced hundreds of readers. I dont feel the movie industry should be subjected to religious belief, religion is already struggling in these modern times, perhaps they should put their energy where it counts.
