Integrated Photovoltaics Market Will Reach Four Billion Dollars By 2013

+ By 2013, there will be an installed capacity of 10.8 GWp of BIPV, of which 4.6 GWp will come from Europe and 3.7 GWp from the U.S. Approximately 7.0 GWp of total BIPV capacity by 2013 will be from residential applications.
Although the market will remain dominated by rooftop installations, facade BIPV will account for 1.1 GWp by 2013.
+ Much of the growth in the BIPV market will be generated by a new generation of BIPV products. By 2013 the PV-encapsulated roofing product market, consisting of solar tiles, slates, and shingles will generate $2.5 billion in revenues. Also by 2013, facade products such as solar curtain walls, building cladding and atrium glass will produce $430 million in revenues.
Solar cladding is a very competitive alternative to conventional cladding materials and is claimed to provide similar aesthetics to marble and bronze but at a fraction of the cost. Solar curtain walls present a special opportunity since they are easier to receive planning permission and permits for compared with conventional roof-mounted PV.

Engineering Silicon Cells to Make Photovoltaic Power Affordable
$1.00 a watt sounds good to me.'Emanuel Sachs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has struggled with many such little devils in his career-long endeavor to develop low-cost, high-efficiency solar cells. In his latest effort, Sachs has found incremental ways to boost the amount of electricity that common photovoltaics (PVs) generate from sunlight without increasing the costs. Specifically, he has raised the conversion efficiency of test cells made from multicrystalline silicon from the typical 15.5 percent to nearly 20 percent—on par with pricier single-crystal silicon cells. Such improvements could bring the cost of PV power down from the current $1.90 to $2.10 per watt to $1.65 per watt. With additional tweaks, Sachs anticipates creating within four years solar cells that can produce juice at a dollar per watt, a feat that would make electricity from the sun competitive with that from coal-burning power plants.'

Now this is a sexy ($$) story about alternative energy. Love it.

This doesn't take any pro active legislation coming into effect before this timeline, such as the bold moonshot plan that Obama and Gore have made statements about or even the plan put forth by T. Boone Pickens. I think that the market will convievably be much larger than even this estimate.
And in terms of cost efficacy the photosynthetic replicating photovoltaics, that can be printed in reams like paper and don't require cooling are projected to cost as little as a dollar per yard compared to a hundred for the current power cells. That being said even current generation technology is coming to scale and becoming cheaper.
