Chevron lobbyists fight Ecuador toxic-dumping case

Image...
What Chevron does with the it's.. 'human energy'.

The largest environmental class action lawsuit has been filed against Chevron, formerly Texaco, for the dumping of over 18 billion gallons of toxic waste water directly upon the Ecuadorian Amazon rain-forest floor..

Since the court's environmental remediation estimate came in at a whopping $8-16 Billion dollars, Chevron has been shaking in their penny loafers and employing a few old tricks

(Chevron has hired former Republican Senator Trent Lott to lobby the Bush Administration to pull Ecuador’s special trade preferences unless Ecuador dismisses the $16 billion lawsuit against the company." -Amazon Watch)

Luckily for the 'little indians', they just might have Obama on their side..

I was in ecuador in June. The natural enviornment is simply stunning, and the ecuadorians work hard to preserve it.

why did chevron have to go mess it up?

Figures they hired a REPUBLICAN to fight their dirty deeds...what a mess. I saw this recently and all they did was cover up the stuff and never took it away...what a pity and disaster. They should pay up....big time in fines and to the people there. Big Oil=Big Mess=Big Crime

I always knew that rainforests didn't have enough protection, but this is a travesty! Hopefully, some people at Chevron will be brought to justice and won't get away with just throwing money at the problem. Either way, the potential damage they've caused is impossible to measure.

why is it possible for huge corporations like this to conduct business in other countries with total disregard for the people and the environment?

the corporation should be held accountable just like you or I would be if we dumped polluted waters into the local city park or courthouse lawn.

it cannot be legal for them to hire a republican big gun and threaten the country that has been damaged with the rescinding of trade policies if the lawsuit doesn't just go away.

amerika...what the hell has happened to you?

Businesses will always get away with as much as they can so long as it benefits their bottom line. It's just the nature of the beast. That's why they need a cage- legislation and enforcement of the law.

The News Hour with Jim Lehrer is sponsored by Chevron. They ought to look for other sponsors or I just may boycott.
