Female soldier is obviously raped to death by military contractor, but officials say it's 'suicide'

LaVena Johnson, a private in the Army was brutally raped, beaten and killed in 2005. Her teeth were knocked in, her nose broken, she had teeth marks on her body and there was corrosive liquid poured into her vagina, most likely to destroy evidence. Then she was shot and her body set on fire. After all this, the military called it ... a suicide.

Who are they kidding? What is the real reason they are covering up this murder? A trail of blood from the private's body led into the tent of a military contractor from Kellogg, Brown & Root (a subsidiary of Halliburton at the time). I don't want to make any conclusions now about who might have done this and why it was covered up, but one thing that is exceedingly clear from the evidence is that she was murdered and there needs to be an investigation into who did it.

There is a website set up to follow this case and demand justice: http://www.lavenajohnson.com/

I got pretty worked up about this on last night's show. That's because I actually care about justice and I care about our troops (instead of just putting a bumper sticker on my car):

In my opinion, this was part of the atmosphere of lawlessness that was fostered in Iraq by the Bush administration. But I don't want my opinion to get in the way here because this should be something that we can all agree on. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has already improved a lot of the conditions on the ground in Iraq and this doesn't have to be political at this point. If Republicans care about the troops as they say they do, they have to care about what happened to PFC LaVena Johnson.

Thanks for highlighting this story. This is infuriating. This is what happens when idiots vote a madman into the White House. Now there are private armies running rampant in Iraq, evading the law.

Its only a matter of time before we have to fight those armies here on US soil.

I've included the link to Color of Change's form where you can petition Congressman Waxman to look into this.

The army distorting facts and covering-up potential liabilities in order to save their public image and keep their recruiting numbers up?

    ...business as usual.

People think that it's so easy to do the news or anything on TV that has to do with hosting. This guy shows that it's not that easy...because he's not doing very good with this. At.All.

Aside from that this is a disgusting story and as always I want to know what they were thinking when they labeled it a suicide.

Her weight and gender doesn't matter because she is human and what happened to her was horrible.

He needs help with doing a show...he's not doing a good job. But good to know about this story because it's bad and something should be done.

I'm sick of hearing rape stories taking place in the military, or at all for that matter. Military officials need to do more to foster equality for females and homosexuals. This testosterone-fueled bullshit must not stand!

So when did she shoot herself? Before or After she set herself on fire??

How can anyone with any conceivable amount of logic in their brain deem this as a suicide?

    This is typical american behavior.

People with power are unaccountable no matter how horrible, evil, corrupt or fundamentally wrong it is their actions are.

We see stories of the powerful and the rich living above the law coming out of america on nearly a daily basis.

It's sad. I feel horrible for the poor woman. But if I was told the story and then asked to guess which country this story is coming from, I wouldn't even flinch before guessing the USA.

    Poor woman. Poor poor woman.

Another example of how america has become the enemy.

This was so brutal, so much anger. It makes you wonder exactly what this was about. No one should have to die like this.

She was "weiped" and Murdered? Fuck, I hate this stupid "Young Turks", seriously. The worst skill they have is to be a reported. Seriously, never put these guys to "illustrate an event" they are the worst.

I voted this one up for the Girl, the Government obviously has some common sense issues.

I think Bush should die in the very same way.
Every single member of our government as well.

Why do the media and government focus so intently on the atrocities going on in other countries when things like this are happening in the US? Clearly, we're having trouble with basic human rights in America too.

My day was going great.. but this just literally pissed me off. Women getting brutally raped by people in their own army?? Is that what the world has come to.. and to call this suicide is just utterly and disgustingly wrong. I hope that contractor feels every single horrible thing he did to that woman and burns in hell for it.

All of America is quick to turn a blind eye to men in uniform. Most of them are derserving of our respect, but just because a man puts on some camouflage, that doesn't make him a good guy. The very men who did this are probably celebrated in their home towns. People who belive in this war are also backing things like what happened to this poor woman, along with torture and the rest.

"Women serving in the U.S. military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq."

This is where the rubber meets the road with sites like this. What needs to happen to initiate some actual action on this???

    So tragic.

I heard the grieving parents interviewed on the horrors perpertrated, then covered up by the military, on their lovely daughter.

It is heart-breaking to hear the girl's father talk about how devastating her loss was, and how it was compounded by the cover-up and claim that she committed suicide.

This depraved act and it's cover-up show the current administration can not be trusted to act like human beings.

This young woman, tragically, is not the only female soldier who has been raped, denied justice and murdered.

When will Americans realize the illegal war in Iraq is dehumanizing our soldiers and causing these atrocities against our own children?

Good God. I am appalled and sickened. People really do need to hear this, vote this up!

Another minority horrifically slain. And a service woman at that. But racism/sexism don't exist in America right? I wonder how many dehumanizing acts it will take for us to wake up and realize we are, as country, not ok. As long as we continue to ignore and downplay these fundamental human rights issues, we will continue to allow the space for atrocities like this to happen...
