Johnny Depp to play The Riddler in Dark Knight sequel?

Image...
Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has set the bar high for Gotham City villains, but reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.

Plans for the sequel are yet to be announced but it is likely to star Christian Bale reprising his role as The Caped Crusader.

The Dark Knight has smashed box office records in the US, taking $314 million in just 10 days.

There is even talk of it challenging Titanic to become the biggest movie of all time. Titanic took $600 million in the US. The Dark Knight certainly looks set to reach second place in the all-time chart and beat Star Wars, which made $460 million.

What do you think? Are Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman your ideal Batman villians? If not, who is? And can comic book adaptation movies really produce Oscar-worthy performances?

They shouldn't put the Penguin in, he's totally not in the same vein as the new batman films: he's cartoonish, and ridiculous.

Baddies like the Joker and Riddler are totally believable, and I think Depp would bring something new like Ledger did with the Joker.

awesome. PSH is one of my favorite actors, (along with bale) i could see him pulling it off and done quite well actually.

I'd like to see Joel Shumaker play the role of a random gothamite thug who has the utter crap beaten out of him for his attempts at the Batman franchise.

    That would indeed be super.

I'd like to see Bane and Catwoman make the next film.

I think Nolan already has said there will be no Penguin in any of his Batman movies...

Now, I could see they do a new Catwoman or even a twisted Mad Hatter.

no catwoman. no penquin. and also, johnny depp doesn't really do it for me. after seeing him as willy wonka, i have lost faith. he just acts weird. i can do that.

yea i agree, johnny depp as wonka really turned me off. hes kinda jus a disney puppet now anyways. not than i can blame him im sure they pay really well. i kinda hope they dont do the penguin too, but if they do hoffman would be good. although i think devito did a good job for what it was.

I don't think you can settle for anything less than the talented Mr. Depp in the sequel after that great film.

He would so do well. He was Willy Wonka. All he had to do was be more creepy and weird and he's got this down pat.

Depp would be amazing as the Riddler. That's exactly his style, bring it on and they've got my money.

Johnny Depp would be great. He is such a versatile actor.

No penguin. I hate that character.

I was opposed to the idea of them bringing the Riddler back. But Johnny Depp might do it justice.

You know why I love this story...because I love it when Hollywood FINALLY takes a pop culture icon and treats it with dignity.

I hated what Hollywood did with the first time around with Batman...although I thought Jack Nicholson did give a good performance.

PSH and Depp will be excellent choices so long as the execs produce a decent script for them to work with.

For those of you who don't know, Nolan says he is not doing any Batman characters that have already been put to screen for the next movie (including Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler).

I think Ledger's Joker should remain untouched. Introduce Harley Quinn as the Joker's advocate with him in the background. Yah.

After The Dark Knight, I will trust Christopher Nolan. If he thinks Penguin will work - penguin will work.

Although I think this is up Depp's alley, I want to see Depp play a regular character for once.

Both Depp and Hoffman nail everything they are in. People were seriously guessing Ledger being the joker in pre-production. After Dark Knight, whatever Chris Nolan wants to do is fine with me.

personally i think Depp could play the Mad Hatter quite well. More likely choice if they're gonna go for ones that haven't previously been used in the films.
Scarface (and the ventriloquist) could be an option.
Both these 2 characters fit with the kinda just crazy villains rather than some of the more comic book ones.

What with the Joker not being able to be brought back maybe they could bring in Harley Quinn!? Probably my favourite character.

No Catwoman and no Poision Ivy. This is a shame.

For the next film, either J-Mann for the Riddler and the return of a very sadistic Catwoman which is hopefully nothing like the one from the Halie Berry movie.
