Image

I have just received this email which I have traced to Vietnam and sent to Interpol. It has taken Nigerian Fraud scams to a new level - death threats and extortion are serious criminal offenses. Should you receive the same mail, I advise you to forward it with full headers to your local police department. You can find the appropriate police department in your area/country here: http://www.interpol.int/Public/Links/PolJust.asp

Here is the email in question (without the full headers):

    • Whoa. This latest extortion "e-scam" tops anything that I've ever seen. It sure beats the Hell out of all the ones trying to extract my finances by getting me involved in UK Lottery winnings and dead Nigerian millionaire US account transferals.
Keep me posted on this one.

    • I just like to say that they need to learn to type better. They fail at being totally convincing based on how they structure their email.

However, telling someone you're going to kill them if they don't comply would throw certain people for a loop and it's good that they are informed of this.

I have not gotten any such email, as of yet, and I have not gotten any Nigeria email in a while.

The one time I got such an e-mail I e-mailed them back asking why me. I didn't get a reply. It was my throw away email anyway. It gets so much junk mail I rarely read it and rarely check it. I'm trying to clean it out so I can have control of it again...but it's taking a long while.

    • “Scam artists and internet predators often use these schemes to frighten people into paying large sums of money. This is extortion and may be prosecuted,” said Attorney General Jim Hood, “If you receive one of these emails it is probably a hoax, but I still recommend that you contact our Office and/or your local police or sheriffs department. Anytime a citizen receives a threat, by whatever means, it should be reported to the local law enforcement authorities.”

Do not respond to these threatening e-mails. Report them to your local law enforcement authorities and the Attorney General’s Office. Anyone with concerns about a suspicious e-mail, may contact the Office of the Attorney General, Consumer Protection Division at http://www.ago.state.ms.us or 601-359-4230.

      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jackson, Miss-A threatening e-mail is making an appearance in Mississippi The e-mail is similar to other threatening hoaxes which have been reported in the state. Attorney General Jim Hood announced that his office has received several reports of an e-mail which involves a death threat to the recipient. The e-mail is most likely an extortion scam or hoax,. This particular e-mail is listed by the FBI at http://www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm as an extortion scam and on several internet security sites as a hoax.

The e-mail sender claims that he/she has been hired to kill the victim and states that the victim will be killed unless the victim pays a large sum of money to the e-mail sender. An example of such a e-mail is as follows:

Hello I am very sorry for you Xxxxxx, is a pity that this is how your life is going to end as soon as you don’t comply. So I sent my boys to track you down and they have carried out the necessary investigation needed for the operation on you but I told them not to kill you since their findings shows that you are innocent. I called my client back and ask him of your email address which I didn’t tell him what I wanted to do with it and he gave it to me and I am using it to contact you now. As I am writing to you now my men are monitoring you and they are telling me everything about you. Get back to me now if you are ready to pay some fees to spare your life, $12,000 is all you need to spend You will first of all pay $6,000 then I will send a tape to you which I recorded every conversation I had with the person who wanted you dead and as soon as you get the tape, you will pay the remaining $6,000 by hand. Since Current is the only place where I've posted this, besides interpol, it is not unlikely that someone registered with Current is the culprit.

    • My husband has just told me that for people living in the USA, such an email should be forwarded, with full headers, to the State Attorney General, and perhaps to the United States Attorney General, Justice Department, as well.

    • Vierotchka:

      Hi Vierotchka,

This is very interesting reading but I, personally will take no notice if I were to receive the message and would confine it to the bin along with the many Nigerian offers to make me a wealthy man

The senders are using the age old threat of fear by using the words "AL QAEDA" in the message. They assume that you will be filled with dread when you see these words.Tne thing you should consider is the fact that they are giving you an e-mail address.
This is a definitely a mail from a moron/phsyco, call him what you may so you should have no worries.

Since the United Nations branded AL Q a terrorist organisation they have never disclosed their whereabouts always working covertly so they are not going to start broadcasting in this manner and giving the authorities the ability to trace them.

      Keep smiling

Oh, I realize all that, but some people receiving this might well fall for it. Moreover, besides the fraud aspect, death threats and extortion are serious criminal offenses - that is why it needs reporting to the police authorities.

Yes, it obviously works with some people or they wouldn't keep trying. We had a similar scam involving a transaction where they actually sent a money order that, of course, proved to be phony. When we tried to turn it over to the authorities they pretty much shrugged it off.

    • Vierotchka:

Ok Vierotchka I fully understand your points and agree with them.

Many will be very worried if they were to receive this mail as it is intimidating in its content.

The reason I appear to brush it off is that I am getting a bit long in the tooth having lived more than my alloted three score and ten years so every day I wake is a bonus to me and my family.

I have served my country and gone through some hard ties but at the end of the day my motto is:- keep smiling.

Laugh and the world laughs with you .Cry and you cry alone
