Rand report utterly discredits Bush, leaves McCain without a campaign

A new report by the conservative Rand Corporation calls the so-called 'War on Terrorism' fundamentally flawed, doomed to failure. The study pulls the rug from under John McCain who had promised not just more of the same old horse dung but perhaps another one hundred, another '10,000 years' of war against Iraq!Saying that the US should 're-think' the so-called 'war on terrorism', the report claims that Bush failed to meet his own stated objectives. It was, the report concludes, the wrong approach to begin with.
Rand stopped short of repeating my charge: the 'war on terror' was just a cover for Bush's assumption of dictatorial powers which he accomplished with the Patriot Act and numerous 'signing statements', in effect, his de facto 'rule by decree'.
All terrorist groups eventually end. But how do they end? Answers to this question have enormous implications for dealing with al Qa'ida and suggest fundamentally rethinking post–September 11 US counter terrorism strategy.
The evidence since 1968 indicates that most groups have not ended due to military pressure but because (1) they joined the political process or (2) local police and intelligence agencies arrested or killed key members and that few groups achieved victory within this timeframe.
The ending of most terrorist groups requires a range of policy instruments, such as careful police and intelligence work, military force, political negotiations, and economic sanctions. Yet policymakers need to understand where to prioritize their efforts with limited resources and attention.

I didn't need a think tank, conservative or other, to tell me this - I came to the same conclusion in October 2001 when war preparations and threats against Afghanistan were being vociferously made by the Bush administration, and posted as much on many different discussion boards. That it took seven years for a conservative think tank to come to that conclusion says a lot about the speed of thinking in such think tanks...

guys, it might be too late now. Now that the think-tank has released its report. I think they would only do this to make them look good, and knowing that there is nothing we can do about it. When the war first started I thought it was because Hussan was a bad guy. But now I think they had to get him out of the way so that big oil companies and other billionaires could come in and grab all the land and make big profits. I am ashamed I went for it. FORGIVE ME WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm happy to see that this perspective of the 'war on terror' has finally made it to the mainstream media. But it's also frustrating because this truth has been painfully obvious from the beginning. It's not like this is some recent breakthrough for them, Rand has a certain agenda that benefits from this report.

I think the proper title for this thread should be, “Rand report discredits US policy on terrorism.” If people would stop playing the label game and actually consider the tactics of Bush, both Clintons‘ , McCain and Obama you’ll realize they’re all in agreement about certain key policy issues which create terrorism in the first place.
They all want to expand the military, continue to engage in undeclared wars, military interventions and sanctions and none are planning to leave Iraq or Afghanistan. But wait Obama said he wants to withdraw all the troops from Iraq! Well that’s a blatant lie. Obama and McCain voted in ‘05 to establish fourteen permanent military bases.

In some sort of sick pathetic way the attacks of 9/11,
where I believe it was "19 murderers" that hi-jacked
four commercial flights "completely void of security"
with box cutters has worked in their favor! In aftermath-our nation went in to an arbitrary war in Iraq.
The cost of life and monetary value for Iraq and The United States has been astronomical. The U.S. avoided the real war in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan and Pakistan have since become bastions for “murderists”!Our country and constitution became exploited by an elitist, nationalistic administration!
The wealthy flourished the middle class spiraled downward.
Our economy is dangerously close to a super-recession or depression? And radical right-wing “murderers” have united throughout the world!
If you could ask a radical fundamentalist if 9/11 accomplished its goals
What do you think the answer would be? - 1 year ago

Good post, Vierotchka. Still, I think that as long as Obama keeps acting as cocky as he is right now, McCain still has a campaign. I think it's time for some humility... It makes me worry.

Olberman is I guy I follow quite regular. He is open and speaks not only the truth but puts it over well.He is no fan of G.W. and as regards Cheyney I just shake my head in disbelief at what the pair have done to the credibility of the USofA in the search for world domination
Check out AlterNet he is often there and the site is not too favourable to the donkey in the White House
I regulary voice my opinions on the site and get good responses.

I have said this before.....George Bush is a puppet.....and not even a good one.....It is a shame and disgrace when you can not even function as a puppet.....the group that installed him have made the worse mistake they could have made.....the general public is starting to awaken from a long nightmare.....presidents are figureheads.....don't blame them.....try to get to the actual puppetmasters......and good luck.....the only thing that may make it easier now is this group is a watered down version of their predecessors.......they have to let things get better.....if it is Obama....great......just remember.....he will be a figurehead also......just an intelligent.....kind.....one.........Golden Ruler.......Will.....

I think it's interesting they point out involving the terrorist groups in politics helped end the violence they had been inciting. Just goes to show if you add enough bureaucracy to the situation, nothing ever gets done and the organization fails, our Congress being a prime example.

Couldn't they have another five or six years and billions more to continue the war on terror? Maybe they can wipe it out completely? I'm referring to the treasury, our credibility, things like that. Great Post V.

I believe one of the major forces driving Bush/Chaney to invade Iraq was the profits to be made from war for many near and dear business associates.
The oil companies certainly were not adverse to Americans spending blood and fortunes securing another source of oil for their insane "legal" profits.
It's an ill wind that blows no one some good. Too bad that only a few have not suffered under Bush/Chaney.

When Rand abandons the conservative cause celebre, the cause celebre is in serious trouble --if not kaput!
It's about time! For everyone but neurotics, psychopaths, or those suffering from psychosis, the truth has a liberating effect. The truth just might liberate America from Bush's lies and tar babies in Iraq.
