Vaginal rejuvenation surgery has been blacklisted by gynecologists in Australia who say that more women are being injured by the procedure.

Top health specialists say they are seeing an increased amount of women, who have undergone the rejuvenation, with scarring, infections and altered sexual sensations.

Doctors also feel that these surgeries may pray on vulnerable women with insecurities and fears who need psychological help.

    • Great, another argumentation story of uniformity. It's a shame to think are so consumed with Sex and Sex organs

But, let's take a brief pause and rejoice at the Australian decision to begin the long and arduous process of controlling the virus that is Plastic Surgery. An industry long built upon the exploitation of people's insecurities in regards to their body image.
The "designer Vagina" on it own is ridiculous. You spend £10,000 (an unsupported estimate but I'm only doing what the media in general does now aren't I) on getting an externally perfect vag, you can't have sex for weeks, it'll probably be painful to sit, stand, walk or drive a car until all the mess is healed (and healing IS unpredictable), then you've really got to reassess most of your life now because do you want to keep that Vag in it's perfect state still in mint condition or do you have the desire to test it out, make sure the insides is in good working order too? Do you want children in the future?. Yea I'm making a fairly grotesque example but these are the questions Doctors should be asking instead of telling them "While we work on reconstructing your Vagina would you like us to make your bottom bigger and rounder like all those celebrities out there, it's on special this week at £7,000." The only boo for them, what about the "designer cock"? Stop that too! The motivation is similar and there are similar horror stories in regards to that procedure also.

    • On a lighter note, "blacklisted" va-jay-jay's might lead to some interesting comments like: "Damn baby, your shit's so tight it feels illegal"

    • The term "designer vagina" just sounds gross and the concept seems a little weird. Then again, this is coming from a guy that thinks fake tits are stupid and comically shallow as well (despite ironically having dated more than my fair share of Barbie doll-looking girls with them anyway).

Still, I thought they were dumb and unnecessary and just attracted the wrong kind of attention from men.

Seriously though, if it's that big of a deal, just get a c-section or don't have kids or learn to love sucking...

      Never mind, didn't go there.

    • This is such a tricky subject, and a big one within feminist circles.

For one, like so many others here have reiterated, it really does boil down to the individual in terms of deciding whether or not (it) is necessary.

On the one hand, it could be a good thing to keep this procedure from being banned, so long as *INTENSE* counseling and information about the risks involved are provided both before and after the deed is done. But on the other hand, I can't help but compare vaginal rejuvenation with the horrific practice of female genital cutting... yes, it seems frightening to many, but it is a practice that has deep cultural roots, just as a tight vag has (somewhat) cultural significance in places like North America, as unfortunate as that may be.

And then there are the hypothetical positives to this procedure; for instance, let's say a woman has undergone female genital mutilation in her past and does not want that traumatic event to prevent her from being able to appreciate and enjoy her body/ sexuality any longer. In such a case, this procedure might be highly beneficial, so long as it is made easily available.

Lastly, is there going to be a similar ban on procedures for men?

    • There is a clinic not too far from my house that does this surgery.

I think that people should be allowed to do whatever screwed up sit to themselves they want.

But yeah, kinda over the top.

I mean, are old vaginas really that disgusting?

      What's the problem?

    • point taken, Delia. but i'm not convinced that it's happening at the will of the people. the vag stories seem to make it to the top rather quickly through one or two particular staffers. Just look at the voting record on this post.

    • I heard about this in a Jessica Valenti book. Messing around down there is dangerous (guys, would YOU want someone cutting and pulling stuff off YOUR junk?) and preys on women with low self-esteem...same with boob jobs, and men in nightclubs who can't get laid otherwise.

Glad they're bringing this up in Australia. Does anyone know the stats of these operations in America? I'm sure it's not as popular as fake boobs around here, but still.

    • I agree, Swiyyah. This is a relevant story for a variety of reasons- the commentary on our modern plastic surgery obsession, women's health, doctor practices, etc. Don't listen to the haters. If they don't like vagina stories, that's their loss!

    • I found this story really interesting because it's about Women's Health. Not just sex. It's doctors jumping on women's health side and saying hey this kind of surgery is bad. Get over the superficial stuff. This could really hurt you physically and psychologically.

I dunno. I don't see a problem with informing people about women's health issues. That's just me though.

    • but isn't this kinda the same with a lot of cosmetic surgery? surely doctors standing so morally against vagina rejuvination should also consider not doing some other procedures with harmful effects such botox or facelift-type things...?

    • Designer va-jay-jay...this is the only solution to alleviate the problem of sexual stimulation for women? Why can't we take a pill? Or just realize as we age some things just don't work like they used to.

    • Hmm. Women end up with "scarring, infections and altered sexual sensations" and there are fears that "these surgeries may pray on vulnerable women with insecurities and fears who need psychological help". Um, I'm sorry, is that a surprise?

Instead of chucking money and surgical stitches at perceived problem pussies that need fixing, wouldn't it be pretty damn amazing if we could address where those perceptions of wrongness come from? Can you imagine a world where the vast majority of us don't feel shit about some aspect of our bodies, whether our noses or our bellies or our va-jay-jays? The idea blows me away...

    • this reminds me of the time when Aaron Bero burst into our first grade class, pointed to his legs and announced "my first pair of designer jeans!" They were Wranglers, I believe, which some would argue are not true designer jeans.

    • I think the moral of the story here is:
if you want a nice tight pussy, dont try to squeeze a baby through it.

and I agree with Jay. Current should try to distinguish itself from the rest of the internet drivel that caters to people more interested in sex than anything of actual import. (even if it does rack up the clicks)

    • I'm all for plastic surgery (just look how much it's helped Dolly Parton's career) and she's open enough to talk about it...

but seriously, this isn't "beautification." No one sees your vagina unless you're a porn star, and in that case, if this is going to help your career, then go for it.

but to the average woman, unless you're a (aspiring) cougar or a MILF, what the hell is wrong with you trying to seek male bedroom approval by buying a new vagina?

    • What is a designer vagina? Can you get, like, a Versace? You think Project Runway is going to have a d-v competition this season, or is that just too hot for basic cable? Auf! And is this something you can buy off the rack or is it more of a commission-based thing? You know, can you get it taken in or is it as-is?

She's in her 70s, people. My grandpaps is such a playa!

    • All surgeries should be approached on an individual basis to outweigh the benefits and the risks.

That being said, I think unless you have a serious abnormality or defect, this surgery is ridiculous.

Considering the amount of people who actually see my vagina, I am more likely to get plastic surgery on the bottom of my foot.

    • I have a beautiful set of balls. If anyone needs a "ball model", I'm available. You could get your very own set of implants and sculpt your tiny little Republican marbles into a shiney new set of Independant mega-jewels. An artifical outward display of ones manhood is warranted for some. Rove, Cheney, Libby, etc. Anybody named "Scooter" that's older than twelve, certainly has tiny huevos.

Who ever heard of an ugly Vagina in the first place?

    • My dad told me when I was a kid to only brush the teeth I want to keep. Now if you women would just take care of yourself. Your insides would not be falling out of you and you would not need this surgery.

    • Oh yea, I remember hearing about something similar to this called labiaplasty. Plastic surgery to modify a women's labia, as suggested by the name; but, also the ability to "re-virginize" the vagina. Unless you have some serious, and I mean serious, issues with your genitals I would definitely recommend not undergoing any treatments. As with any surgery, some loss of sensation, whether temporarily or permanent, is likely and that just doesn't seems worth it. Granted, in my experience no one I've known has been focused on how good something feels on their labia. Like other procreative choices and body enhancement procedures I'll leave the choice up to the one seeking treatment.

    • What is the point in banning vaginal rejuvenation surgery? If a woman is desperate enough and has the money to pay for the pricey procedure, she is also likely to travel to another country to get it done. Wouldn't it make more sense to try and change the way women perceive themselves (and their vaginas)?
