In fact, some of meals contain more 1,000 calories, which is almost as many calories as some elementary-school children need for the entire day, according to the analysis from Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer group.
The report shows, for instance, that:
• Chili's country-fried chicken crispers, cinnamon apples and chocolate milk has 1,020 calories.
• KFC's popcorn chicken, baked beans, biscuit, Teddy Grahams and fruit punch, has 940 calories.
Overall, the findings reveal that 93% of the kids' meals at McDonald's and Wendy's contain more than 430 calories, the average number of calories that children ages 4 to 8 should get at a single meal. The comparable numbers are 92% at Burger King; 89% at Dairy Queen; 69% at Arby's; 60% at Denny's. The latter's kids' meals don't include drinks.
On the healthful side, about 67% of the kids' meals at Subway have fewer than 430 calories.
"When you go to most chain restaurants, ordering off the kids' menu is a nightmare," says Margo Wootan, nutrition policy director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and the mother of a 10-year-old daughter.
"Right now kids' meals are almost all unhealthy meals when they should be almost all healthy meals," she says "At the very least, restaurants should list calories on the menu so that parents can navigate through this minefield of calories and fat to find the healthy options."
The average child, under 18, eats 167 restaurant meals in a year, according to the NPD Group, a market research firm.
For the latest study, nutritionists with CSPI analyzed the calories in 1,474 different meal combinations at 13 chain restaurants. The nutrition information was gathered from the chains' websites and corporate offices. Many of the restaurants offer numerous kids' meal combinations and each meal was considered separately.
CSPI used national nutrition standard recommendations from different groups to determine nutrient needs for children. The Institute of Medicine guidelines recommend that moderately active children, ages 4 to 8, consume about 1,300 calories a day. Therefore, the consumer group calculated that a single meal should not contain more than 430 calories.
The findings showed that overall 45% of the meals are too high in saturated (animal) and trans fat and 86% were too high in sodium.
Some healthier alternatives are available including grilled chicken, seafood, whole-grain wild rice, yogurt and fruit.
Among the kids' meals that have fewer than 430 calories and weren't too high in saturated and trans fats:
• Subway's ham mini-sub, 1% milk box and apple slices, 405 calories.
• Subway's roast beef (or turkey) sub with juice box and yogurt, 400 calories.
•Chili's grilled chicken sandwich, apple juice and mandarin oranges, 338 calories
•Denny's pancakes without meat with maple syrup, 373 calories; or macaroni and cheese with grapes, 413 calories. (The meals do not include beverages.)
•Arby's popcorn chicken or junior roast beef sandwich, fruit cup and fruit juice, 422 calories.
Some major chain restaurants were not included in the study because they did not provide enough nutrition information to evaluate calories. Those chains included Applebee's, TGIFriday's, Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Red Lobster and IHOP. Some places, such as Pizza Hut and Dunkin' Donuts, don't have kids' menus and weren't included in the report.
-What's your take on this subject of kids needing to eat more healthier when it comes to eating in resturaunts and fast food joints.

Yes, but do children ever finish their meals before they're fighting with siblings, or tackling important topics with imaginary friends?

The way we feed our kids in this country is borderline child abuse...never ceases to amaze me...
-
......Americans, let's face it: We've been a spoiled country for a long time.
Do you know what the number one health risk in America is?
Obesity. They say we're in the middle of an obesity epidemic.
An epidemic like it is polio. Like we'll be telling our grand kids about it one day.
The Great Obesity Epidemic of 2004.
"How'd you get through it grandpa?"
"Oh, it was horrible Johnny, there was cheesecake and pork chops everywhere."Nobody knows why were getting fatter? Look at our lifestyle.
I'll sit at a drive thru.
I'll sit there behind fifteen other cars instead of getting up to make the eight foot walk to the totally empty counter.
Everything is mega meal, super sized. Want biggie fries, super sized, want to go large.
You want to have thirty burgers for a nickel you fat mother fucker. There's room in the back. Take it!
Want a 55 gallon drum of Coke with that? It's only three more cents. -
Fast food is unhealthy? I don't believe you.

I'm stunned by the stat that the average child eats 167 restaurant meals a year. When I was a kid, I remember that going out to eat was a treat, not a normal occurrence. 167 times a year breaks down to a little over 3 times per week...doesn't anyone cook anymore?
-
apparently no one cooks anymore or hardly anyone cooks. Fast food joints usually meant for every once in a while but we can't forget the fact that fast food is "fast" and convenient and are just about any where. I'll use McDonald as an example. If anyone is familiar with "Super Size Me" fast food is unhealthy and just like what the article states "1000 calories packed in today's kids meals". The food is unhealthy plus the 1000 calories in kid's meals. I think McDonalds needs to pay more attention on what they are offering to us. It's no surprise that the U.S. is one of the fattest countries in the world.

167? Geez...I don't think there is anything wrong with taking your children out for a fast food meal every now and then (my younger brother and I used to get one or two Happy Meals a month when my parents had the money, and we turned out fine), but eating out that often is a quick way to kill off your kids.

Blame the parents. Is it that difficult to understand that they are responsible for feeding their children and educating them on what they should eat? The basic issues here are education and self control.
Fast food chains are doing a great job serving a great tasting, cheap, and fast product. It's basic supply and demand. Stop demanding unhealthy food and they will stop supplying it, make a salad instead.
-
What trips me out is all of their entertainment tactics the fast food chain's use to ignite the child's interest. Insane.
-
Just go online and check the calories of all the things you eat from fast food. Once you find out how many calories you have been eating, the whole family will be making better choices.

after a good fried plate o' shrimp from my local seafood joint i always head to DQ's for a small dipped vanilla cone , and i always thought it was alright , until , as i vacillated at my DQ's one day and looked at their calorie chart ( interestingly , it's placed exactly above their indoor trash-can ) i noticed my small , single dipped vanilla cone topped their single hamburgers , chicken fingers and large fries so far as calories and fat were concerned , and came pretty close to beating the fried shrimp platter i'd just enjoyed . i was impressed . i still do the same routine , of course , but i don't eat fries with my shrimp anymore - i get cole slaw as my side instead.
-
I've been crabbing about this for years - I hope people wake up and realize they are literally poisoning their kids with that cruddy food!
Good pod!
-
most people are pretty clueless about nutrition so it isn't surprising to see parents feed their kids this type of stuff and not question it.
the information has been out there and most places (save fridays, quizno's, and a few other sit down eateries) do make it public but most of us ignore it.
-
Are you surprised? Look at what the adults eat. That's why I eat kids meals as an adult and everything works out perfectly.

i think people forget that your getting a meal for less then 7 dollars and in less time then it should take to make something like that.
you should have already known the risks that come with eating those types of foods-

McDonalds (etc) is a modern day answer to population controll.
-
There's nothing wrong with a 1,000 calorie kid's meal. There's something wrong with parents who feed that garbage to their children.
-
Go Subway! I guess...
-
Does anybody go to a fast food restaurant thinking that the food they're going to consume is nutritious?
What we need is a nice little compulsory class to educate people on how to make decent (and cheap) food at home.

This is just another reason why i look around and see so many overweight children, fast food giants prey upon our stress ridden society....really, my parents took us out to eat maybe once a week, maybe, we always had a meat and two sides every dinner at home that was cooked. Then it was back outside to play, that is the key....no one tells their children to go out for the day and play in the back yard no one wants to have to possibly watch their child, so they sit them in front of the tv, and feed them junk, that is supposed to be safe and that way they won't get kidnapped or mugged, if you would just interact with your children, go out walk, garden together....there is no excuse everyone has time for that.
I am a single mom with two jobs, and my five year old and I still find time to play ball garden, take walks.
It still goes back to parents being lazy.
Parents who are uninvolved and uncaring.
sad really. -
Blame parents? No way. Blame corporate agribusiness! This is not an effing coincidence. Agribusiness needs to sell calories to make a profit, so they sit around and find ways to get you to eat more calories, little marketing geniuses that they are... Don't eat at those restaurants at all! There is nothing good about fast food at all! McDonald's slaughters 4,000 cattle per HOUR, tell your kids that next time they want a happy meal...
