While there has been little research conducted on Icaros, we do know that the songs are used to call defenders (arkana icaros), cure specific illnesses, reinforce the effect of medicinal plants, attract the love of another (huarmi icaros), call the spirits of the deceased, cause rain, wind or thunder, for bewitching, for hunting or fishing certain animals, and for curing snake bites.

The main alkoloids in the brew are N,N-DMT, and an MAOI (usualy a harmala alkoloid). there are over 2000 plants and some animals(including humans) that contain DMT(N,N-dimethyltryptamine) world wide. the chemical is produced in the human brain, the venom of some toads, a few speicies of fish, and thousands of plants from grasses to trees.
It is one of the oldest known ethnogen used by man. Traces of DMT containing snuffs have been found in pouches of mummies and the iceman was carrying it when he died.
The Ayahuasca brew is made with an MAOI(Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) to increase its bioavailability when eaten/drank. Other tribes in the same areas(S. America) make ritualistic DMT containing snuffs that lack the MAOI.
recently DMT has been produced in its freebase form and smoked for an instant and incredably intens "Trip" that last up to an hour. where as the brew comes on over several hours and lasts up to 12+ hrs.

It can cause very profound experiences that can be Religious, euphoric, scarry, and bizzare. i can not stress enough that this is not a recreational "drug", but a spiritual guide to another "dimention/reality" It is much more powerfull than LSD, or Shrooms and should be treated with respect, lest you want it to bite back.
Note:MAOIs are hallosenogenic as well and very dangerouse when mixed with other drugs or food. eating a bananna within 2 weeks of consuming an MAOI can cause great harm and even death. in short the brain is overloaded with seritonin and shuts down = death or brain damage.
