Delta Air Lines to offer Wi-Fi on U.S. flights - CNN.com

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. said Tuesday it will offer broadband wireless Internet access on its entire domestic mainline fleet by the middle of next year.

Continental Airlines Inc. previously announced plans to offer similar service across a majority of its mainline fleet. Several other airlines either offer similar service or plan to, though on a much more limited number of flights than the plans by Delta and Continental.

Atlanta-based Delta said Wi-Fi service will be offered for a fee to customers traveling throughout the continental U.S.

The nation's No. 3 carrier is partnering with Aircell, an airborne communications provider, to install the network on Delta's domestic fleet of more than 330 aircraft.

Is this what we need while flying? Kids with their handheld games, business men with their laptops and porn?. What ever happened to dropping Dramamine and sipping a scotch?

    • Before Wi-Fi, Delta should consider updating their movie system from VHS. I recently flew Delta. It was like a throwback to 1987. It sucked.

    • I like the idea of WiFi on a flight but failing airlines such as Delta shouldn't be the ones providing it. Let's leave the luxury upgrades to the airlines that can afford to offer basic services.

    • I would rather have the computers and programs updated to the 21st century rather than have 1970's software telling my plane where to go. Also, hire more flippin' aircraft controllers and train them well!!
I do welcome the wi-fi add-on, but what price will they set for it? would it be per megabyte, per hour?

    • I wonder how fast it will be. Can you just fetch some emails, or will you be able to stream vimeo clips? I might pay for that to help pass the time.

    • So...let me get this straight. I can't use my phone on a plane, but now I can get wi-fi which allows me to chat and check email? Since I can only bring one carry on - which must be of an approved size and weight - is DELTA providing the laptop too? I don't want to pay an additional $25 or $50 to check my Facebook. I'm just sayin'.

    • It's cool and all, but something like this really should be free. WiFi isn't something companies should be charging for outside the home anymore...especially considering how much you pay to fly.

    • I have a bazillion frequent flyer miles on Delta from my last job when I had to fly them... now I finally have a reason to cash some of them in! My boss is going to be so happy I can squeeze a few more hours of productivity into my work week.

Virgin America had better step up to the plate.

    • This seems like an odd move. They're losing money and charging people for baggage, soda and to use the bathroom....while at the same time their UPGRADING their fleet to wi-fi?

That sounds similar to a person not being able to make their car payment and deciding the solution is to buy really expensive rims.

Maybe we should focus on getting the little things right (like elimintating baggage and snack fees and not dumping people out of wheelchairs) before we focus on the fancy extras.

    • I'm with you on the scotch sipping Kynmore. Goldenways posted an article on July 30th about Delta. It seems that they left a handicapped person stranded for several hours. If I have to fly any time soon, It's not going Delta.
