A judiciary spokesman said four people sentenced to die by stoning had had their sentences commuted and that all other cases had been put under review. Lawyers and human rights campaigners have said at least eight women and a man are awaiting the punishment.
Amnesty International called on Iran in January to abolish what it called a "horrific practice, designed to increase the suffering" of those condemned.
Amnesty also said a disproportionate number of those sentenced to death by stoning were women because they were not treated equally before the law and were particularly vulnerable to unfair trials.

Its 2008. Stoning is something that was done in biblical times. Why on earth is it still going on in the first place. They neeed to abolish it, not just suspend it.

I wonder who would have the heart to do this. How can someone just stone a guy to death? Just watch him die slowly.
You think Iran is going to listen to Amnesty International? I highly doubt that.
-
lol

I cannot imagine taking part in something like this. It's amazing how traditions and cultures can overtake human consciousness -- to make people believe that stoning a fellow community member to death is morally right, and bring them to do it. I hope that Iran bans stoning like they banned public hangings.
-
At least it's the beginning of a move in the right direction for a justice system thats been trapped in the dark ages forever.
-
In the words of Ahmadinejad, stoning people to death is so 20th century...

This is interesting because it shows what we are all capable of. how far are we away from this sort of barbarity. Bosnia and Serbia are still recent memories. There must be more pressure that can be applied to these countries ?
-
Maybe Blackwater should hire some Iranians to whore out to the DEA now that they are against getting STONED. hahaha

Ah yes, that's those animals who we deemed to be involved in some bizarre hanky panky if I remember rightly.

I hope this is true, but the claim comes from Iranian State Media. We don't have evidence that Stoning is actually suspended. Iran can claim many positive changes through state media while the world watches, but we will never know the actual truth.
-
So they literally just throw stones at someone until they die?
Look at the positive side: maybe this is something the US and Iran could actually bond over! Why can't George W. Bush just call the Iranians up and say:
"S'up! Just wanted to touch base with you on the whole human rights things. You know we got dirty looks from the snooty Europeans when we opened GitMo. I mean, dude, so what if we want to ass rape our POW's, stack them in naked pyamids or water board'em? It's BS, man! So I just wanted to call you guys up and say, I feel your pain. No pun intended! Ha ha! Anyhoo...hang in there. I know we've been talking som shit before, but I guess we're not so different after all. Don't let those snooty Europeans take away your proud tradition of stoning and we'll stand strong on our tradition of sodomy, beatings, and naked pyramids. Alrighty. I'm out. Peace!"

I wonder if they got life in prison instead of a stoning.
Let them kill each other so they don't kill americans
they will never change if this quack thats running the country now changes to much another one thats more extreme wii take over. -
None of them have killed Americans, but most of them surely will if America attacks their country. You seem to know jack shit about Iran and Iranians, regularrf.

Compare that to the other extreme here in America where things like Ashley Madison (the affair hookup service for married people) exist and are blatantly advertised on the radio.
Isn't there a happy medium kids?

Its a cultural thing, it just seems they are looking into making the court systems more fair rather than abolishing stoning.

How a male dominated society can place so much responsibility in punishment on women, and yet let men off the hook more often is beyond me. Women have little control over their lives in Iran, but they are punished as independents as though they are completely willful participants.

this a scene from a movie that portrays the stoning....... its accuracy is probably mediocre at best.. but for a sort of "example" ... here it is....um.... fyi ... the three guys are reporters and which is why they cant do much.... the guy that comes in (with the black) is the lead terrorist and theres is huge cinematic fight in the end... which u dont get to see.....
they shot this somewhere in afghanistan...
