HIV-positive transgender immigrant died of neglect while chained to bed in US detention camp
Her mother, Olga Arellano, and fellow inmates begged for help after Victoria started vomiting blood in their holding cell, where 105 detainees were crammed onto bunks and mattresses in a space designed for 40. However, the pleas were to no avail and Victoria Arellano died, chained to a hospital bed, three days later.
According to rights activists, Arellano's death shows the failure of immigration officials to deal humanely with HIV-positive inmates among the 30,000 migrants held in detention centers across the United States. Often, HIV-infected migrants are not given their medicine regularly, which is crucial to their survival. As soon as the medication regimen is interrupted, the virus rebounds and causes the immune system to crash.
In Arellano's case, the failure to provide medical help was fatal. According to mother Olga Arellano: ''She [Victoria] told me after a month in detention that she still hadn't seen a doctor. I told her I could send her more medicine, but she said they would not give it to her. They were mostly giving her Tylenol.''
''Her foot was chained to the bed and when she tried to turn over, it would hurt her,'' Arellano said. ''That made it twice as hard. It was so humiliating. No human should have to live their last days like that.'

The United States government has mistreated immigrants repeatedly, and just use the same excuse for their treatment of the immigrants, which is, "They are criminals who are breaking the law by coming here illegally."
Sad, but true. It's pathetic.
-
That's just sickening. Thanks for posting this.

"105 detainees were crammed onto bunks and mattresses in a space designed for 40" This is the kind of conditions that one finds in jails in the worst third-world dictatorships.

It's true, they are criminals, but this kind of treatment is absolutely out of line. In my oppinion, the people responsible should swing for this.

Thank goodness the shameful actions of the US migrant detention centre have been brought to media and social network's attention. Actions like this should be held accountable for.

I think this show a failure of immigration officials dealing humanely with humans.
-
Why do they come here? If they get better treatment when they are deported what was their motivation in coming to America Illegally? Better life? How did that work out for them?
As for this situation it's disgusting that someone is throwing up blood and another person decides to use their feet to move the about. I cannot imagine not helping someone in such a predicament. I couldn't work in a place that allowed people to be ignored like that and think it's alright.
Illegal or not everyone is human and treating them as if they are not just because they are not what you like in a human is not justifiable. Understandable...but not justifiable.

Ah, successful immigration policy at work. Human beings chained to beds and deprived of basic health and human rights; that's basically what we're saying is appropriate. Remember when immigration policy was in the forefront? What was the best idea we could come up with? A fence. Yeh, great. Many people travel hundreds of miles, some through dangerous desert terrain, in order to get into the U.S., and we want to spend a couple billion dollars to install a 10 foot obstacle course for them? Oh it's cool, we'll just spend another hundred million or so on keeping them locked up in detention centers. What? We're out of money? Oh, well chain them to beds, sell their medicine on the black market, and feed them cornmeal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Problem solved.

The way the US has been dealing with the immigration issue is ridiculous. How can we expect to keep someone out of our country if they're willing to risk more to get in than we're willing to risk to keep them from succeeding? I don't see how anyone can condemn a person like this for wanting a better life, especially when the critic hasn't done all they can do to improve potential immigrants' lives back in their home...wouldn't that be the humane thing to do?
I'm not saying that I think we should just let people flood in. A little humanitarianism would be nice. Oh, and maybe some respect too.
Immigrants should not be treated as if they're less than human. If anything, many of them display a type of courage we should all strive for.-

Just another example going to show that as America preaches human rights and humanitarianism, we turn a blind eye to our own hypocritical ways.

Most people wouldn't care to take care of an American transgender with HIV. How can we expect immigration officials to take care of an illegal alien transgender with HIV?
-
shouldnt have come to america.
You idiots are so infatuated by this bullshit it's sickening. "IT" broke the law by coming here and "it" died because of AIDS.
good riddance.

Well,Well,Well, Ah Life in the United States just gets worse everyday and being an immigrant really must suck and especially being HIV infected. There was a time when the U.S. sort of stood for being the guys in the (White Hats) but now that we have been for the last 8 yrs under this Facist Government we have become the guys in the BLACK HATS what with the BS in Iraq ie. Abu Grab(spelling?)and now our government is protecting us with this so called homeland security and ICE.....I am very Sorry For that young woman being treated like so much trash that needs to be thrown out. We have this incredible government that thinks it knows what is "good" and what is bad.......I'm not proud to be an American anymore........MsLynn
-
proud to be an American and an immigrant here from Asia. I don't think isolated things should be blown out of proportion. As a matter of fact, immigrants had been treated well for the most part that they were able to slam some planes into our buildings.
Liberals should not be so liberal in dissing their own country. If you do, then the US does not need you. Go somewhere else.
-
I commiserate with this story of course, and we should blame the people in charge who should have done their job. But, please, stop bashing your country. it's not like your country is just the government.
-
Tranny's creep me out, and I mean in a major way, but this is just wrong. Midgets creep me out, too (little hands!). Nonetheless, everyone deserves to be treated with decency, even criminals. I figured we would have learned from slavery that how we treat others also has an affect on us (see Douglass).
-
I'm sick about this. No one deserves to go out like that. It's also sick that they didn't give help to an HIV positive person who was spewing blood in a cell crammed with other people. God only knows how many people could have or did become infected. That poor person, being chained to a bed like that in her last hours...
-
Ya know its sad that things happen like this in our country. Honestly though you don't really know if this is the whole truth with todays media reporting lies, half truths, and a bunch of bullshit propaganda. But if this is all true thats pretty bad, your all gonna call me heartless and what not, but she should have just been deported so she could get medical help in her own country that way the people of America who pay taxes wouldn't be wasting tax money on yet another person whom doesn't pay taxes and leech's off an all ready crumbling system.

I used to tell myself "it ain't so" but i recall seeing actual "emergency" martial law training exercises on youtube (posted here on Current...i'll find it) where American soldiers were TRAINING to deny food, water, and any necessary medical care to "detainees" herded into their barbed compounds (diabetics, etc. are of no legitimate concern at all). they systematically rendered their "subjects" completely defenseless, confiscated any and all guns, etc.
against all conscience, this is going on and it really is the kind of systematic treatment they WILL TURN ON EVERY U.S American citizen, when the time is right.
the U.S. government is absolutely phukt. the U.S. is hitler's new "germany" for the world....
-
All this as GW preaches to China about "their" human rights policies. We have become a shining example for the world to follow.

Yet another story that makes me want to move to outer space.

I don't think you can pin this all on the government... remember who elected them... us. We have to take responsibility for our republic. Saying, "The big bad gov't is to blame," totally discounts the fact that there are people here who hate immigrants, hate trannies, hate people with HIV and think we have carte blanche to tell the rest of the world how to conduct themselves.
WAKE UP AMERICA!
