Since the newspaper published the wedding ad announcing the upcoming union of Kresta Spencer and Carrie Taylor, it has received two letters to the editor (one for and one against), 10 e-mails, several phone calls and four subscription cancellations over publication of the announcement.
Narayne Rougeau, a North Logan resident, complained: "Same-sex marriages are not recognized by the State of Utah and cannot be performed here. I would also suggest that you change the name of the section of the paper to 'weddings, engagements and live-ins or other relationships' since you obviously seem content to publish out-of-wedlock living arrangements as actual marriages."
Neither Spencer nor Taylor could be reached for comment, however, in one of the online responses to Rougeau's letter, Spencer said the couple was forced to use the paper's wedding form because that's the only one available: "The announcement we sent to our friends and family did not include the words 'marriage' or 'commitment ceremony.' We were very specific and said please join us in a 'celebration of our love.'"

Congratulations to these two women. It's too bad they live in a place with so many closed-minded people.

I think Utah is the active word here.
They are also home to the world most ironically named team, the Utah Jazz.

Utah is pretty close to a theocracy in it's government and history, but has gotten very close at one point or another in the past.

Mormons dont like gays, so i think for these women to come out and do that tooka lot of guts! Good for them!
-
Only two letters to the editor (one for and one against), 10 e-mails, several phone calls and four subscription cancellations? This isn't much at all. I'd have thought that in Utah there would be at the very least ten times as many. It seems that tolerance and/or acceptation is growing fast.

If two individuals who happen to be the same gender announce in the paper that they want to celebrate their love, does it affect your life at all? I think not.
-
I have to say this is interesting, only because one doesn't normally see same-sex announcements in the paper...
It is one facet I had wondered about, in the sense of "what would happen if same-sex couples started posting their announcement too?"
Glad to see the Mormon Capitol of the world becoming diversified....

I say let the residents of Utah focus on this, the most important and relevant issue up for debate today. I mean, we have so very much for which we should thank them. When you consider the fact that they helped resolve the...what? Really? Oh, I just assumed they'd solved the energy crisis and brought peace on earth and had given us a justifiable reason to listen to their ignorant rantings.
How did gay marriage make it onto their short list?Where the hell does Darfur fall on the list?
Rubble...rubble.
-
And we're SURE they weren't complaining about the Nescafe Gold Blend ad on the opposite page?
I jest.
We know it was really because the couple were behind with their tithes...

The solution for us, and there's enough of us that have commented on this page, is to write our letters of commendation to the same newspaper, send them polite, positive e-mails, and ask for information on subscriptions.

So what they're saying, essentially, is that these two people can't get married in Utah and since they can't get legally married they can't let people know that they're committing to each other in any way, at least in the paper. Am I right here? Are they also saying that out-of-wedlock living arrangements are a bad thing? Because if these two people who love each other can't get married, how can they be together in any way other than 'out-of-wedlock', and how do they let the world know that they want to commit to each other forever outside of the paper? There's a circular logic to the person complaining, and try as I might, I just can't follow the 'ring around the rosies' pattern...

Oh no! Hide your children!
PEOPLE ARE IN LOVE!
We have changed laws and amendments for many many years. Why not marriage?
If we didn't change anything, I'd still be called "boy" when I'm 30.

Many newspapers won't publish same-sex wedding announcements. The NY Times only recently changed it's policy.
-
Let's hope their union is long, filled with love and happiness. As for the stance of the Mormon or most of the worlds acceptance, if these two people love and nurture each other, it shouldn't matter.
