ABOUT 10,000 Victorian children aged 10 to 14 have been cautioned by police, arrested or ordered to appear in court in the past year, as a surge in youth crime continues.

Victoria Police say the escalation in juvenile crimes — ranging from break and enters to drug offences and assaults — is being fuelled by children's growing exposure to sexual and violent images on the internet. While exact figures for the past year are not available yet, police dealt with 9860 criminals in the 10-14 age group in 2006-07 — a rise of 18% on the previous year — and say the situation is getting worse.

The head of the police youth affairs office, Inspector Steve Soden, said too many children were viewing inappropriate content on the internet and this, coupled with boredom due to a lack of community services on Melbourne's fringes, was behind the alarming rise in youth crime.

Media panic. Media panic. In the olden days, when novels started being printed, and kids started reading, adults were all in a huff because they were learning certain behaviours from reading these books and then acting on them. Adults were up in arms about how reading novels caused children to be unruly, disobedient and hard to control... that's right, hard to control. Adults fear new media because it is unknown to them, and the changes they see in the younger generations as they adopt new media faster than the older generation are unpredictable and harder to control.
I think the real issue in this story is the "boredom due to a lack of community services on Melbourne's fringes". But then, that would be turning the finger on themselves, wouldn't it.

I completely agree with abbym. Perhaps in a few cases, the internet and other media can act as a trigger of an underlying disposition, but the latter must already have been formed and shaped by cultural and social influences.

PS: What is the story with that picture? If all children were that fat, it would be seriously difficult for them to turn to crime unless you are talking about criminal activities one can conduct while sitting or lying on a couch.
