Yet far too often policy makers and even anti-poverty advocates overlook the day-to-day realities that make it especially challenging for women living in poverty to follow a traditional path to economic security.

Over the past ten years I have had clients with 3 children living on less than 700.00 a month in Northern California. They are renting living room floors to sleep on and have to be out of the house all day long. The examples are numerous. Sure they have food stamps that last maybe for 10 days and that is all. So if women are living in poverty just how many children do you think are living that way as well. These children grow up without an idea of what "home" is.

Based on the US Census covering poverty through 2006, that percentage may be higher. It's best to adjust for those not included for a variety of reasons, legal or otherwise. I find the child factor very disturbing.

Compared to how many in other countries?

The next President should immediately focus on eliminating poverty in their first administration. There is no excuse for numbers like these anywhere, especially in the richest country in the world.
