The new statements regarding LGBT issues were made in a response to a letter by the Family Equality Council (FEC) asking candidates to outline their plans to "recognise, respect, protect and celebrate all of the loving families [they] seek to represent."
John McCain, who failed to respond to the FEC letter, said in an interview with the New York Times last month that he does not believe gay people should adopt children.
Obama, on the other hand, emphasised: "I'll be a President that stands up for American families; all of them. The desire to build a life with a loved one, to provide for a family and to have children who will grow and thrive; these are desires that all people share, regardless of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity."
"We ... have to do more to support and strengthen LGBT families. Because equality in relationship, family, and adoption rights is not some abstract principle; it's about whether millions of LGBT Americans can finally live lives marked by dignity and freedom."
Senator Obama listed more funding for after-school programmes, the abolition of the federal ban on same-sex marriage, an end to discrimination against LGBT families and "equal treatment in our family and adoption laws" as goals for his administration.

I certainly hope he delivers on this promise to help gay families.
-
I wonder if he has read my paper on CFEE (Committee for Family Equality and Edification)?
-
i hope we can see this happen

He irked me when he was (supposedly) inconsistent on this issue.
Glad he clarified.
Hopefully he isn't full of shit.
-
he wont win on these kind of pledges
-
McCain's response that gay families should not adopt really shows how out of touch he is with American culture. He sounds like a grumpy old man. This can only help Obama.
-
YOU ARE YOUR OWN GOVERNMENT!!
-
IM FOR GAY MARRIAGE!! GAY MARRIAGE MEANS THEY CAN LIVE TOGETHER IN PEACE AND STILL BE ABLE TO RAISE A FAMILY!! ITS AMERICAN DAMMIT!! THEY ARE ABLE TO RESCUE CHILDREN WHO HAVE NO FAMILY!! WAKE UP AMERICA!

It's good to see Obama making a stand on something that could potentially alienate some swing voters. He should have substance to back up his promise of hope.
-
will see if he delivers though, talk is cheap
-
I'm definitely holding him to that
-
Thank you Senator Obama. Make sure you carry through with this when you are President Obama.

Woo. Makes me love him even more.
The fact that he's so open to that, even though he isn't gay and has many ripping apart his every opinion, is incredible. That's the kind of leader I want. Hopefully he delivers. Now let's just make sure that fat white guy doesn't get in.
To be honest, montesooma, you are exactly what I hate about living in the US. Besides, 'fat' was a loosely used term for derogatory purposes as well as referring to him being financially fat, living off taxes from those who work hard, whether doctors or Macdonald's burger flippers. I'm also white.
montesooma, you are racist, confrontational, and a perfect example of why the world hates our country. Congratulations.
-
You can hold him to it, but don't hold your breath. Just because the man becomes President doesn't mean he'll be able to wave a magic wand and everything will be as he promised. He's going to face alot of opposition and not everything on his wish list is going to be crossed off. It's unrealistic to think otherwise.
-
looks like LGBT families will receive Obama's support, as long as they resemble his model of heterosexual families. unlike McCain, he at least acknowledges gays and seems more tolerant overall but, i'm not impressed. Obama will get my vote, however, i'm not yet sure whether i buy into the belief that he's an audaciously hopeful agent of change.

You can't make everyone happy and Obama is trying really hard to do that and he should stop.
-
Talk is talk.
I believe in action.
However, there are many policticians who are too scared of criticism to even SAY they support LGBT rights.
Because saying it says you are okay with gay people. Which sadly, is a stigma.
So kudos to Senator Obama for even putting himself out there.
But if he DOESN'T stand by this, then... well, he'll just prove himself another political snake.
We'll see.

Please go away for a while, to have a opinion about this now with the world the way it is. I think there are more important things. That's all you see is Obama over and over, making meaningless statements we still have three months until election day go on vacation. The news has already made you the winner solve a real problem.
-
The typically homophobic baby-boomers have become a more marginalized voting populace, so now we can hear politicians openly voice their support for what most post baby-boomers feel is an constitutional no-brainer.
We MUST hold him to this promise (and see to it that he wins rather than his jurassic opponent)

This position won't help Obama with the socially conservative voting bloc, but it IS consistent with his previous rhetoric about being our brother's keeper and the need to offer equal opportunity for everyone...
-
That's because he needs your VOTES, he really doesn't like guys, infect know one likes guys, or being guy....They just deal with it...
-
Regardless of what becomes of this pledge, it's bold to make it at all.
-
The statement that gays shouldn't adopt isn't applicable to every gay person. Many gays have children from previous straight relationships and they still face discrimination for being gay. Obama, unlike McCain, seems to understand that he doesn't live in a world were everyone is supposed to think just like him. Whether you like it or not, there are gays that have children and they need to be able to raise their children in peace and with the same rights as other parents. If you're not gay, it's not hurting you for gays to have equal rights.

Wow. I would never have thought that Obama would come out and say something so liberal. Good for him. I truly hope that he can stick to his guns and do what has needed to be done for 8 years. Good luck Obama.
