"Andy Kaufman" claims to be making a return at TNA Genesis

There has been a spike in interest recently over claims that Andy Kaufman is alive.

Allegations of him being Orange County resident Steve Rocco are nothing too new, but an ongoing investigation on comedy website Something Awful has revealed several strings to a larger issue.

andykaufmanlives.com is linked both to a Stephen Maddox and Steve Rocco. Steve Rocco is also linked to an English musician whose manager bares more than a little resemblance to Rocco himself.

Other strange and unusual activities include seemingly random people receiving an Andy Kaufman WWE figure (minus Jerry Lawler, who came in the same box) in the mail with notes signed "Andy Kaufman".

There is also an e-mail address, iamandykaufmanandiamalive@gmail.com that is owned, once again, by someone claiming to be Andy Kaufman. People who have e-mailed him have reported to receive a variety of strange e-mails, including an offer to show up to a convention "in costume" and the promise that everyone will find out what is going on at TNA Genesis.

TNA Genesis is a wrestling PPV in November, so one could conclude that *if* Andy Kaufman were to return, he could choose to do so during such an event.

This whole thing points to one of two things: either Andy Kaufman is alive, or a freakishly large consortium of fans (from the Orange County School Board to TNA wrestling to a comedy musician in England) have conspired to generate interest in Kaufman, thereby keeping his legacy alive.

  • I once heard Kaufman's style described as being, "beyond humour". That fits.
    I used to watch him on "SNL" and wonder what was going through his head as the audience couldn't make up their minds whether to laugh, boo or just sit there in silent confusion.
    When he landed a role on "Taxi" as Latka, he stipulated in his contract that his alter-ego (one of many, apparently), Tony Clifton (?), was also hired. "Tony" would, sometimes, show up in Andy's place and raise so much Hell that security had to escort him off the set.
    Then, there was the infamous "Letterman" wrestling incident.
    With each "routine", Kaufman looked, more and more, like he was withdrawing into himself to be replaced by a more agressive, abusive personality.
    When I heard the news of his death, frankly, I wasn't surprised. He seemed to be headed in that self-destructive direction, gaining speed with each passing year.
    Is he still alive? If he is, this may well be the greatest "put-on" ever created by someone who revelled in putting people on.

  • This is real immortality. Kaufman will never die. Not for at least thirty years, at any rate. By that time people will say "Yeah, but he'd be at least ninety now, so he must be dead!"

    Judging by his Wikipedia entry I'd say that faking his death for 25 years is definitely within the realm of possibility.
