Afghan children raped, parents want to commit suicide

I have a couple of problems with this, though. Killing yourself wouldn't make anything better. The girl just got raped and then her parents want to kill themselves? It doesn't make sense!

Secondly, why are these people getting special treatment while the same thing is happening to countless others? Even a 3 year old girl got raped and they didn't find the people who did it.

I know that every life counts and that they're actually doing something about it. But if they're going to help that family, they should start helping a lot more.

I don't understand the parents on this - why is this about them? It was their child that was raped, how in the world would this help her? Could it be they were thinking her first, then us? Selfish bastards.

them threatening suicide got this story on CNN and a visit with Karzai didn't it ? there's no better way to begin the process of creating a "justice" serving infrastructure than making headlines - this family is courageous . many rape victims are killed or commit suicide to save the family from disgrace , and it's always hushed up . this is a sign of progress .

Clearly you are all of a Western mindset here, so let me try and help bridge the gap for you. A rape committed against a girl in Islamic nations reduces her chances of getting married, labels her a slut, and shames the entire family. A woman has failed her family if she looses her virginity before marriage and the potential partner complains. Chastity = Everything for women there, and there are no excuses for it being lost, even rape.

The parents are threatening suicide because everything is based on getting their kid married, and now that she's been raped, unless they bring the rapists to justice, they're screwed.

Oh yes, it must be sooo hard for THEM when their daughter gets raped, and it's not like she MIGHT need their support instead of their deaths.

rwylie, our customs and traditions are as barbaric and immoral in their eyes as are theirs in yours. It is a question of culture and tradition that are thousands of years old. They are no more grade A idiots than you are.

I also saw a story on the plight of young girls who are forced into marriages. Some felt such despair that they set themselves on fire; the girls saw suicide as the only way to escape a terrible life.

The U.S. made a deal with the devil when it decided to place these warlords in power.

There is no point in them killing themselves to leave the girl even more vulnerable than she is now

Just prooves that most of the worlds population, at minimum, should be encouraged to not procreate.

Suicide if justice isn't served? That seems like the most illogical solution that could have been decided upon.
A better alternative would be to provide loving support to the 12 year old, who is going to need help with acceptance of the situation at hand.

thats really sad because im sure the parents are at a point where they just Dont Know What To Do. Im sure they dont want to kill themselves and leave there child. Could you imagine the helplessness they must be feeling by saying Give my child justice or ill kill myself?That poor family.

That's a good plan. Just leave her to fend for herself instead of offering more lifelong support.

I can understand their frustration. They are getting press coverage to try to bring justice to their poor girl. Granted, there are others suffering just as bad or worse but those who get in the media get served first, sad as that may be.

Positively horrible. I don't think that suicide is the answer of course, but in that society, the kind of shame brought by unmarried intercourse (consensual or not) is obliterating to family honor. It's horrible that that's what tends to be the deciding factor, but I'm glad the family has not only honor, but their poor daughter in mind as well. Those gunmen (people, and men, just didn't seem to fit in that context) should be punished. Not just punished, they should be dishonored, and they should be traumatized. Maybe, if the parents get their way (which I hope they do).
I hope the daughter survives this, and is made stronger by it.

The girl's parents have no other hope. By promoting the idea of suicide allows for their incident to be notice in the media to bring justice to their daughter. There are many similiar cases in Afghanistan. Even if they find the perp, the Afghan justice system probably wouldn't guarantee anything for the girl or her family in terms of the perp's sentence.

Drama for the mama.

This is like saying you stole my car so I'm going to kill myself. Also If they commit suicide wouldn't that just leave their daughter alone with no one to care about her? Talk about trauma.

I read this on the LA Times. I think they said that they will all kill themselves, including the daughter, if justice isn't served.Virginity is everything to the women in Afghan.

Here, in the good ol' USA, you can find the same beliefs, and you don't have to be Muslim.
It's very hard to understand, for those of us that are brought up in the west and revere life. I can understand honor and shame and how they mesh into a conglomerate ideas and feelings.
But the part of any culture and belief system that condones this contempt for the dishonor of someone so young and NOT at fault, or any woman who is raped, is a culture and belief system that dishonors all.

I think that a mindset that condons the blame of a woman or girl for rape in any country is using man made religion as an afront to pure male dominance, rendering women as objects to that of a ' kitchen sink'.
I am a White Brtish woman who is a survivor of numerous rapes. Rape leads to one thing eventually, Depression and suicidal tenedency. Rape is a death sentence to women. Women cannot defend themselves against a rapist, no matter what brings about that horrific event. Where is this girl's assistance and support?certainly not from her parents, nor her society or her state for justice & law.
This girl will commit suicide, her perbetrators murdered her and was given a free licence with gratitude of her country! Horrific & shameful Afganistan.
