UK plans to ban DIY date-rape drugs

The UK Home Office plans to ban two chemicals which create "date-rape" drug GHB when combined.

Gamma-butyrolactone and 1,4 butanediol, available in cleaning fluids and industrial solvents, turn into GHB when swallowed together. Scientific advisors have suggested these were increasingly becoming "a legal substitute" for GHB and may have been used in sexual attacks.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs found people who consumed either substance regularly could develop a "dependence", as well as falling unconscious or even being killed "by intoxication".

  • Dying by intoxication of lethal chemicals sounds awfully painful. Hopefully the actions to cleanup these solvents will reduce the amount of "date rapes" and deaths caused by GHB consumption

    I think it's good that these measures are been put into place.

    GHB is much more popular than people realise. Check out this pod which looks at how the drug has affected the lives of a range of people, some of the accounts are pretty eye-opening.

  • These drugs need to be closely monitored, but i'm afraid illegalization will just send them underground into the wrong hands.

    Sorry to hear about your friends abbym0308, everyone has to hold on to their drinks. if your out clubbing then finish your drink at the bar before you have a dance or leave it with a friend you trust.

  • You can't ban them drugs, Well you can but it wont help, people will find ways around it to get substitutes or the real thing, the only way to stop it is to stop making the damn ingredients

  • As a clubbers drug GHB has always appeared a strange one to me. The fact that it is potentially lethal when mixed with alcohol makes it's proximity to nightclubs even more scary.
