One of the victims was killed and one was injured in the attack on the first day of the Olympics Saturday.
The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower three miles from the main Olympics site.
The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan said it was ''aware of the reports of the accidents suffered by two American citizens, we are working with the Chinese authorities to find out more on the cause of the incident.''
He declined to comment further, but said U.S. officials were in contact with relatives of the two Americans who are in Beijing.
Police blocked off streets leading to the Drum Tower immediately after the attack, and cordoned off the area with yellow police tape. Security officers were examining the scene on the tower and below, inspecting and taking samples from the balcony railing.
Associated Press photos taken at the scene about 3 1/2 hours after the attack showed a white sheet spotted with what appeared to be blood in the courtyard on the west side of the Drum Tower. It appeared that the body had already had been removed.
A foreign man wearing what looked like an Olympics pass was with police on the balcony. A man from the U.S. Embassy was at ground level.
Attacks on foreigners in China are extremely rare. A Canadian model was murdered last month in Shanghai, but police said that was because she stumbled onto a burglary.
In March, a screaming, bomb-strapped hostage-taker who commandeered a bus with 10 Australians aboard in the popular tourist city of Xi'an was shot to death by a police sniper.
Shanghai and Beijing are still safer than most foreign cities of their size. Punishments of crime against foreigners are heavier than for locals, and police-linked neighborhood watch groups are highly vigilant. Chinese are not allowed to own guns.
Even so, the U.S. government now warns Americans against muggings, beatings and even carjackings, especially in the nightlife and shopping districts of large cities.
Built in the 13th century, the Drum Tower is one of the few ancient structures still in Beijing, and was used to tell time in imperial China for the city, using drummers who pounded their instruments to mark the hours. It is situated on the important central axis of the city, to the north of the Forbidden City, the home of the emperor.

Yeah, it's a shame that these sideshows always seem to follow the Olympic games around the globe.
-
This isn't going to be good for international relations.

New information reveals that the victim was tied to the U.S. Olympic team...
"Team officials and state media say a knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing."

"U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan said it was ''aware of the reports of the accidents suffered by two American citizens..."
Accident?! Unless they were just walking along and fell on the knife numerous times to cause the injuries sustained or, the attacker had some sort of massive spasm in this knife wielding hand, this was no accident.
-
Hopefully it will be an isolated insident

I wonder if it is a disgruntled worker who lost his job becuase they are tyring to get rid of the migrant workers during the games.
-
I guess the pressure of living in such a tightly-controlled society will get to some people more than others, and when they explode, they *really* explode...
-
Even in countries where they have freedom they still have crazed people that kill for no reason that is beyond random.
I hope the family find peace and comfort in this, what was suppose to be, an exciting once in a lifetime trip.
-
i am sorry for that, really a pity, you know, it may happen in every country. in some so-called demorcacy country a student can be a shooter and killed his mates even.
-
That did'nt take long
-
They do have a billion people. They can't have that many and them all be sane and hold enough national pride to not bring about embarrassment like this upon everyone.
-
It is very sad when crap like this happens at a world event for athletics. I was in Munich for the 1972 olympics and
the Israelie athlete's were killed, what a sorry time that was too.-

Come on, the country's so big there's going to be a higher number of maniacs, you can't blame China for having lots of people.
-
the proletariat is pissed.
-
That just stinks! But there are always going to be people in the world that commit crimes like this, unfortunately.

this is really too bad. I wonder the motivation of the crime. Was he one of the displaced? was he anti-American? was he just anti-foreigner? What was happening in his own personal life that brought him to this? Did he know his victims in the least, or were they simply foreign faces? was there an altercation between them before he wielded the knife? was this meant more as a statement to his government, or to the world, rather than a personal vendetta? One thing is for sure, he wasn't feeling the "one world" vibe that they're pushing at these games.

F him . we rule , and we will continue to do so . i hope every person who disagrees will throw themselves off anything which will assure their demise - it would simplify things a lot .

There are many unhappy bunnies living in China and if this guy had gone out with the intention of killing someone to express his feelings.
It could have been any foreign national visting his country american or otherwise.
The embassy spokesman seems to show some contempt when he mentions "the accident" or did he mean to say "incident" Either word he seems compacent about the issue
