Study confirms link between global warming and stronger storms

Image...
Climate models have long predicted that global warming will increase the intensity of extreme precipitation events. A new study conducted at the University of Miami and the University of Reading (U.K.) provides the first observational evidence to confirm the link between a warmer climate and more powerful rainstorms. One of the most serious challenges humanity will face in response to global warming is adapting to changes in extreme weather events. Of utmost concern is that heavy rainstorms will become more common and more intense in a warmer climate due to the increased moisture available for condensation. More intense rain events increase the risk of flooding and can have substantial societal and economic impacts.

Thanks for this report. We need to take action and do all we can and a bit more. Flooding, major hurricanes, droughts...it will be endless.

One example would be the midwest floods this year,
a once in a hundred year event. But it was the 2nd such delude in a decade. Like I have said the deniers
won't admit global warming till a foot of rain lands on there house.

I posted this too two days ago. It doesn't bode well for many agricultural areas that will be innundated with flooding. Of course, only a truly major catastrophic event I fear will do anything to wake some out of their stupor.

Quoting your source on global warming...using their own data against themselves.Unfortunately this video comes from fox news but never the less i should point out if you do a search on youtube on the subject will come up many other Independent sources..(I dont trust fox news at all...but this piece actually is true..research it)

Hmm, did Al Gore do the study referred to in this post? I don't recall reading that here. Oh well, I guess some don't need a reason to keep posting garbage.

This is getting boring...try and dig deeper then these "for show pieces of information"...
Climate models cant predict accurately anything!Even with all this amazing technology they cant even predict accurately a 5 day forecast..
Garbage in you get garbage out...simple...any analyst will tell you that. Most of the data inserted in these model are inaccurate and based on other simulation that follow the same principle.

Why wouldn't they correct their piece?

All this global warming is scary stuff.Mother Nature has had enough and we will feel her wrath!!! Somehow one way or another she is going to force us to change...its such a scary thought for me!

well even if global warming turns out to be false, shouldn't we want to keep the air we breathe and the land we live on clean?

    just how i see it.

Katrina and Rita proved this just fine. We don't need people to keep telling us what we already know. We need a solution.

    Frimer seems confused.

If I smoke, oh, two CARTONS of cigs a day -- can a doctor predict the exact day I will devlope cancer?

What? You mean that a doctor can't predict the exact day (or even the exact YEAR) I will develope cancer smoking two entire cartons of cigs every single day?

So that must mean smoking two cartons of cigs a day must be prefectly healthly, right?

See how silly that sounds Frimer?

Can scientists predict the exact day (second and hour) that earth's climate will reach a tipping point based on the sheer tonnage of industrial pollutants being spewed into the atmosphere all over the world?

    No?

So that must mean that those billions upon billions of tons of industrial emissions have absolutely no effect, right?

See? It doesn't make any sense to view the situation that way.

Does anyone realize that if man were not on earth. All the animals and plants the PETA Freaks ( not the reasonalble and prudent minded ones, just the freaking finatics ) and the Tree Huggers ( again not the aforementioned ones shown in parentheses ) wish had been saved would have proliferated and damaged and destroyed as much or more than man has since then !

Earth recovered from that catastrophy.(whatever destroyed the dinosauers) Man survived and will inevitably make horrible destruction on earth, mostly of himself in the long run probably, but earth will bounce back in time.

Man may or may not last of his own doing. Could the dinosauers (without a natural catastrophy) possibly have eventually destroyed man and man may not have won out as superior to other species but for the reason of other global catastrophies which destroyed his greatest predators?

This great planet is of course A-ffected and E-ffected ( notice emphasis between the two? ) by man no doubt. It is not as subject to destruction by man as so many seem to think.

The earth will survive, Nuclear or whatever for millions of years possibly. Man may destroy himself and most or all life on earth. Possible, yes!, but not likely and if man does this, earth will adapt and recover over time as it has done in the past.

The smartest of scientist are aware of this and also aware of and laugh about the Gore Style multi-million dollar empire he has built with so much of his BS! For every truth he tells there are multitudes of proven extremely unlikely events he predicts, which will never come about as a result of mans influence, convieniently making him a multi-multi millionare quite a possibly a reasult of speaking ability ( rhetoric ) more so than brain-power!

Man again and his influence most likely only speeds up or slows down the process which helps or hurts mankind itself in general.

Even old Albert's ( you know! ? The super smart fellow that thousands and thousands of his theories are being proven each year by scientist due to such things as the Hubble Space Telescope and Mars Rover, Jupiter program satelites and such !) predictions acknowlege it in so many ways.

I think Albert was (then) smarter than Al Gore, also smarter even now AFTER his ( Eienstein's ) death. His thousands of theories are still being proven by the hundreds, beyond doubt, by todays scientists from spacecraft generated information being beamed back to earth.

Mr Gore has not one to be proven YET!!! Wonder when that will happen? What will be proven of his predictions are again, most likely, things which it is highly questionalbe by just as many prominent scientists as likely to happen anyway with Mr Gore, Global Warming Theory, mankinds influence, or not!!! Just later down the road so to speak, where it not for mans contamination of the planet. Women too ya think? Oh! Part of mankind. eh heh heh. More bait for flamers. :) Just thinking per my keyboard here. Lonesome and nothing else to do.

lovely dacy, i figured out instantly you are a kid! Flame away now on that bait! lol I am just a stupid older grandfather figure, old enough to be your daddy's daddy.

Yep, as in grandfather young lady! :) Hey! I actually believe that there is a God. The one Eienstein mentioned as possibly believable as the clockmaker, of the amazing wonder of this universe in which we live, that intricate and perfect clock of such grand design. Yep, Praise God? I do!

    Solar cycle makes this happen.
    Doesn't anyone get this?

We cannot do anything presently about the solar cycle of our sun.

    What the science says...

The study is Surface warming by the solar cycle as revealed by the composite mean difference projection by Charles D. Camp and Ka Kit Tung. They find a global warming signal of 0.18°C attributable to the 11-year solar cycle. Eg - from solar minimum to solar maximum, global temperatures increase 0.18°C due to an increase in Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). To find the solar signal, they detrended the temperature data by removing the global warming trend. They found the detrended temperature correlated well with the solar cycle.

    Image
Detrended temperature (solid) compared to TSI (dotted) (Camp 2007)

However, a fair degree of climate variability contaminated the signal. Volcanic eruptions in 1982 and 1991 coincided with solar maximums. Similarly, the El Nino peak of 1998 occured during low solar activity. Tung and Camp filtered out the noise using various statistical techniques and found an even higher correlation with the solar cycle.

They concluded that from solar minimum to maximum (eg - from 1996 to 2001), the forcing from the sun increases global temperatures by 0.18°C. Conversely, from solar maximum to minimum (eg - from 2001 to 2007), the reduced forcing from the sun cools global temperatures by 0.18°C. This 11 year cycle is superimposed over the long term global warming trend.
    Climate Sensitivity

Camp and Tung explore the ramifications further in a follow-up paper Solar-Cycle Warming at the Earth’s Surface and an Observational Determination of Climate Sensitivity. Independently of models, they calculate a climate sensitivity between 2.3 to 4.1°C. Eg - if CO2 levels are doubled, global temperatures will increase around 3.2°C. This confirms the IPCC estimate of climate sensitivity. In Tung's own words, "The finding adds to the evidence that mainstream climate models are right about the likely extent of future human-generated warming. It also effectively rules out some lower estimates in those models."

The other significant finding is that solar forcing will add another 0.18°C warming on top of greenhouse warming between 2007 (we're currently at solar minimum) to the solar maximum around 2012. In other words, solar forcing will double the amount of global warming over the next five to six years.
    Related Arguments

    * It's the sun

They say earthlings have but a drop in the bucket to do with any of this.

But we do want to keep our earth livable, no argument there, but we cannot stop solar cycles.
So keep rivers, oceans, lakes and land clean and flourishing, don't break the web of life... we should do this because it's the right thing to do, not out of fear.

It has to link global warming to strong storms, because the global warming is part of the natural swing in climate.

Around the 1500's earth had a small ice age, climate is not static. It swings like a pendulum.

Forget it. Everyone who believe everything the media has to say are fools. Why should I though pearls amongst the swine?

Be green, love green, the same way the teenboppers loved the beatles. Make absolute fools of yourself for the green cause.

Then someday you will wake up, and realize that you have been had. But it will be too late, the green car you dream will never materialize.

You will be living in crowded cities, and riding mass transit. While people like algore, and t. boone, will be the richest men in the world.

Of course, algore will pay carbon credits for his large carbon foot print.

i'm not sure humans are the cause of global warming and it makes sense to me that we won't be the fixer either.

doesn't anyone realize the cycles that the earth goes through? warming? ice ages? they're gonna happen with or without us.

It's the sun and the solar cycles.

We should be taking care of our Earth, as we want to live in a beautiful and clean world, but Global Warming is not why we do this.

We do it because it is the right thing to do.

And maybe someday we can control the sun, but today.. we just get to wait and see what happens. Plan for the worst & hope for the best.

We make a difference of course. We should do what is right? Astounding Yes but opinions differ and that goal isn't accomplished. If we could do that MAN would be God.

Have we ever done so? Yes, occasionally.

Has the rest of the world done so? Hardly ever but for the attempts of a small minority. For the wrongs we have committed we have committed more rights that ANY other Nation on Earth! Quit Bashing our own Freaking Country why don't we? Just for sake of taking a break. Self criticizum is a good thing to a point. Then It isn't a good thing anymore for a people and Nation.
