Donald Wildmon, the founder and head of the American Family Association, is asking its members to petition Congress to end all funding for PBS. The AFA is pissed because of an upcoming PBS show, The Bible's Buried Secrets, which according to the AFA , contradicts long-held beliefs. From the AFA's "Action Alert":Take Action
Sign the petition urging Congress to stop using tax dollars to fund PBS. Let PBS operate like every other non-commercial network, raising its own money from its viewers instead of using tax money.
Petition Text
TO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS
In light of PBS's decision to air "The Bible's Buried Secrets," I ask that you vote to stop funding PBS with tax dollars.
PBS is knowingly choosing to insult and attack Christianity by airing a program that declares the Bible "isn't true and a bunch of stories that never happened."
PBS should raise its own money. I should not be forced to help pay for its programs.
The Public Broadcasting System (PBS), probably the most liberal network in America, will present a program this fall that says the Old Testament is a bunch of made-up stories that never happened. "The Bible's Buried Secrets" says the Bible is not true. It is scheduled to air on November 18.
Archaeologist William Dever said: "...It's (The Bible's Buried Secrets) designed for intelligent people who are willing to change their mind. …it will give intelligent people who want to read the Bible in a modern way a chance. If we insist on reading the Bible literally, in 25 years, nobody will read it any longer."
Among highlights of "The Bible's Buried Secrets":
• The Old Testament was written in the sixth century BC and hundreds of authors contributed.
• Abraham, Sarah and their offspring didn't exist.
• There is no archaeological evidence of the Exodus.
• Monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years.
• The Israelites were actually Canaanites.
• The Israelites believed that God had a wife.
I have often said that PBS should not receive tax dollars. "The Bible's Buried Secrets" is simply one more reason Congress should stop supporting PBS with our tax dollars. Congress gives PBS hundreds of millions of tax dollars to help support the network.
There's a trailer for the show here on YouTube.

I'm a Christian and I never claim to be perfect like many modern day Christians. A lot of them are hypocrites, money hungry, uneducated to what God's word really is and put themselves on pedestals which is not right! I am proud to be a christian and will defend the teaching of Jesus Christ because I've seen the power for myself; I also believe in free speech. I don't believe in any "biblical secrets" but I believe if someone wants to make a documentary airing so called "biblical secrets" they should be aired for discussion...so a real knowledgeable Christan like myself can rip them to shreds! I can appreciate PBS for its diversity, although I may not agree with all content and programing!

My tax dollars are funding this? ??????
How unchristian. Feds: Please take all my tax money and put it towards more bombs. If there's any left over, please give it to Haliburton. They are such a Christian organization, helping us in our house to house searches in Iraq, helping us render suspect terrorists or those who we think may possibly might know a suspect terrorist which is close enough.
Give my tax dollars to that Senator from Alaska who wants a 20 million dollar bridge to his house on an island. And, above all, please use my tax dollars in preference to using Exxons. They're going for a world record in profits and I wouldn't want to stand in the way of their 'gold medal'. - 1 year ago

Bush/Cheney would love PBS to go under to, for no other reason than "Frontline." Christians calling for an end to upsetting challenging thoughts seems like a coalition move.

I am not part of any religion but I recognize and appreciate the role religion plays in America, are those of you so quick to demonize American religion the same ones talking about tolerance for Homosexuals, tolerance for Muslims but apparently no tolerance or respect for American Christians.

I don't think they are necessarily demonizing these religions, but when those who are in power don't think that atheists and agnostics should be recognized than it's hard to not have some hard feelings towards the main religious groups of which these people belong to. I've often felt the same way towards them but i recognize that all religions (or non-religions) have their idiots.

I have long felt that PBS should not be funded, they have their own agenda and I have no idea why they deserve Government funding. Let those who love PBS so much pay for it, why should I.

PBS stands for Public Broadcasting Corp.
the reason it's funded by the government is because it is free and accessible to every citizen. just like public radio.
learn the roots of radio and TV communication, and you might realize why the government should fund these organizations.
private entities could have never afforded a nationwide radio network when PBS was launched on the radio.
and they are some of the best in our country (only their talk shows have bias) as far as objectively reporting the facts.

The programming is supposed to represent the entire public, it does not therefore it should not be funded. If they want to have an agenda then they should seek private funding.

it isn't required to represent all or the most of people.
it is required to be free and accessible in the event of emergency communication.

Now that George Bush, and his gang of NeoCon idiots, are leaving office in November, the Evangelical movement has to do something to keep its agenda in the public eye, or else it risks being swept aside by the current tidal wave of hopeful Democratic fervor...
I don't think going after PBS or making it rain on Barack Obama's parade is going to do it though...
No, this has something to do with Ken Burns...I can feel it!

I hope Congress realizes that they would infuriate a much larger and hopefully more vocal segment of the population if they were to eliminate PBS, one of the only relative bastions of open and honest debate left on the so-called "public airwaves".

Pissing off Christians is totally fine with me. Modern Christianity is mostly bullshit. If Jesus came back today the first group of people to put him right back on the cross would be Evangelicals or Catholics or the both of them. However, having a background in theology, the assertions made by the program in question are highly dubious. Either way, let people speak their minds. In the long run honest dialogue, agreed with or not, is the key to understanding. Agreeing to disagree is pretty fucking Jesus-like.

If it's history, news, or science then why not air it? It's not a hit piece against religion, it's trying to teach people something... go find something else to protest please.

Seeing as the federal government is only responsible for about 20% of thier funding, I really don't know how much damage this could possibly do.
Besides, we have the freedom of choice whether to believe or not believe in the bible and people who are skeptical of religion should have the right to disagree with them. If they don't like it they can change the channel to the All-Christian Network for an hour.
