For breakfast, Phelps helps himself to three fried-egg sandwiches, a five-egg omelette, a bowl of grits, a porridge of coarsely ground corn, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar and three chocolate chip pancakes.
Lunch consists of half a kilogram of enriched pasta, two large ham and cheese sandwiches with loads of mayo and a 1,000 calories energy drink.
Another half kilo of enriched pasta is served for dinner together with an entire pizza and another 1,000 calories energy drink.
As Phelps told US television channel NBC yesterday: "Eat, sleep and swim, that's all I can do."

Amazing the mentality olympic athletes have. I guess that is why they are at the top of their game.

He's lucky, because he trains so hard he can eat anything he wants.
-
He can eat whatever he wants and that's awesome. I'd like to eat with him. Ha. I'd be amazed....
-
pshh i eat what i want and dont workout nearly as much as he does, and i still have a 6 pack!
-
who cares. the man is obviously going to have to eat a ton to train as hard as he does.
-
Although, I commend him for his unique accomplishment, the intake of so many calories will eventually catch up to him. It's not a guarantee but current research shows that the more calories you consistently consume the higher the risk of developing carcinogenic cancers or digestive diseases.
-
If I did the same I would just get fat.
-
Lets all idol worship the olympian!
-
At least now if anyone sings "who ate all the pies?", the poor victim can confidently answer "Actually, world-record setting, multi-Olympic gold medal winning swimmer Michael Phelps."
-
I wonder why he doesn't eat any high energy foods instead?

What about electrolytes!?

Wow - over the top! I think I might actually get tired of eating if I had to do 12,000 calories a day.
-
Mmmm. That's a purty picture. ;3
-
I've seen other pictures of his body. Now, swimmers' bodies are usually the most beautiful of all, but his is ugly and repulsive.

Swimmers always have the best bodies. Lean but muscular. Skinny but not small. I bet that is not his diet. He has to be eating healthier than that. There isn't enough protein in that diet--and that's coming from a vegan!
-
What a hog! That's a disgusting amount of food, and if I weren't sitting in a country that wasted more food than other nations consume, I'd probably be more outraged. I don't care how fast the idiot can swim, that's just ridiculous.
-
He's lucky he has this career. He gets paid to workout all day and eat! But it's impressive how he can put his mind focused on swimming.
Me? I'm still 14 years old, and I have studying to do and tennis practice once a week.-

It's great to hear all about Mr. Phelps' olympic accomplishments...
...but, c'mon, do we really need to hear about his diet?

I'm just worried we're going to find out he's taking some sort of performance enhancing drugs.

one of the best cheesy NBC video packages of this entire olympics was the one where they talked about Phelps' diet. He described a typical breakfast, and among other things, he eats: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 3 pancakes, a bowl of grits... fruit... etc etc. It was intense. Apparently, every American needs to be thrown in a pool 8 hours a day and told to swim. We'd all be fit! On the other hand... we may have some serious food shortages...
In the video above he talks about his diet. It's incredible!

He's the fastest swimmer in the world...ever. Yea, I'd like to know about his diet. And everything else.
