12,000 calories a day: Michael Phelps' Olympic diet

Image...
Michael Phelps has revealed the secret to his success: in addition to his six-days-a-week, five-hours-a-day training regime, he consumes an extraordinary 12,000-calorie daily diet, six times the intake of a normal adult male.

For breakfast, Phelps helps himself to three fried-egg sandwiches, a five-egg omelette, a bowl of grits, a porridge of coarsely ground corn, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar and three chocolate chip pancakes.

Lunch consists of half a kilogram of enriched pasta, two large ham and cheese sandwiches with loads of mayo and a 1,000 calories energy drink.

Another half kilo of enriched pasta is served for dinner together with an entire pizza and another 1,000 calories energy drink.

As Phelps told US television channel NBC yesterday: "Eat, sleep and swim, that's all I can do."
