HBO miniseries "John Adams" nominated for 23 Emmys

Image...
John Adams, HBO's prestige historical drama about one of America's founding fathers, swept up 23 Emmy nominations today, the largest number of any program in any category.

Among the nominations was a lead-actor nomination for Paul Giamatti, who played Adams in the adaptation of David McCullough's Pulitzer-prize winning biography of the second president, who was born in Braintree in an area now part of Quincy.

In addition to recognition in several technical and artistic categories, Laura Linney also garnered an Emmy nomination for lead actress in the role of Abigail Adams. Supporting nods went to three actors portraying Founding Fathers: David Morse as George Washington, Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson, and Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin. The star-studded, seven-part HBO series is co-executive produced by Tom Hanks.

The three-hour debut of the John Adams miniseries was seen in 2.7 million households nationwide, according to the Nielsen Co., the best series debut HBO has seen since 2004.

I am not a tv watcher, but I did not miss one episode of John Adams and can say without a doubt that it was one of if not the best tv miniseries I have ever watched. I am so happy that this show was nominated for so many Emmies. It shows that quality television and superb acting are still appreciated. The Emmies will be held on Sept. 21, and I will be rooting for all of the actors nominated from this series... and especially Stephen Dillane who played Thomas Jefferson with such intelligence, wit, and sexiness. He was without a doubt the best Thomas Jefferson I have ever seen. Kudos to HBO, Tom Hanks, and all involved in this thoroughly educational, historically accurate, uplifting production!

Makes you melancholy knowing what was... and hopeful of what could be again.

One of my favorite scenes from the miniseries. John and Abigail Adams along with Thomas Jefferson witness the first untethered balloon flight from France. Beautiful and eloquent.

Great series. I hated to see it end. I immediately wanted a Jefferson, Franklin, and Washington series to follow. I had chills run up my spine when Adams first visited the White House during its construction and was disappointed by the presence of slavery. One of a kind series.

This mini-series was one of the finest pieces of filmmaking I've ever seen. If other productions even come close to the attention to detail, cinematography, music and writing, It could well signal the comeback of the mini-series format. History can be exciting and entertaining!

That scene was so stark.... the look of outrage on Abigail Adams's face knowing that slaves were bulilding the house they were going to live in (the Adams' never owned a slave) was chilling. I too am hoping to see more on the lives of other founding fathers. David McCullough's writing is incredible.

Tom Hanks never ceases to astound me.
He has a gift for getting behind and involved with some of the best that television has recently offered.
"Band Of Brothers" was another high quality example.

My wife and I watched every episode. I would like to read the book. I read and recommend "1776", also by David McCullough.

Paul Giammati can be anyone, anywhere, anytime. He possesses such talent as an actor, with the ability to deftly convey the tensions between strength and vulnerability, openness and stubbornness, hope and despair. I have followed his career for a long while and thought his performance in John Adams was predictably spectacular. Kudos!

I agree, if I were to teach history? I would make my students watch this mini series.
But I borrowed the dvd's off from a friend. I tried to watch them. That has to be some of the most boring crap I've ever tried to watch

23 Emmy nominations are definitely well deserved. "John Adams" is one of the best series HBO has had in a while.

It's not as much about HBO as the story and historical significance of it... and perhaps for some the gratification that such a quality production was aired on HBO. Television that educates as well as entertains is rare these days.

While I was watching this I turned to my boyfriend and said, "This series (and Paul Giamatti) will be nominated and more than one time."

    I WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!! ;) :)

The show and the man definitely deserve it.

I did the flash programming for that site. It's still one of the projects I'm most proud of being involved in. the way they portrayed his relationship with abigail was really intense, my wife and I were very moved by it.

    Thomas Jefferson.

I would pay a lot of money to see a spin off of Thomas Jefferson played by Stephen Dillane, the man who effortlessly strides as the author of our Deceleration in this kick-ass mini series. Paul Giamatti is great as well, but there is something magical about Dillane; I only wish he was on screen more.

    Tumbs Up.
