Read about the uphill struggles for the Iraqi Olympic athletes to qualify for attending the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games this month. Earlier this summer, their chances were almost dashed when the International Olympic Committee suspended Iraq's Olympic Committee after Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki replaced their national committee with one led by a minister of youth and sports. Reporter Juliet Macur in her contribution to the International Herald Tribune ("For Iraqi rowers, being in Beijing is a victory in itself," August 12, 2008), writes about the young Iraqi athletes' Olympic ambitions, and chronicles the historical pressures Iraq's Olympic athletes have sustained.
