I tend to avoid products with hydrogenated oil, because often, trans fat comes along with it. Hydrogenated oils have a longer shelf-life than regular oils - Crisco is essentially pure hydrogenated oil. It has a sort of thick buttery consistency, which is a product of the hydrogenation process.
Hydrogen gas is forced through oil at high pressure in the hydrogenation process. The oils are chemically altered, and in turn, the fatty acids are transformed into trans-fatty acids, which work, in ways, to reduce good cholesterol, and increase bad cholesterol, and the large-scale consumption of trans fat can cause diabetes (di-uh-bee-tees, not di-uh-bee-tus) and obesity (duh). California will soon ban trans fat, which is good, and trans fat has been banned in Switzerland and Denmark.
Look up the facts about trans fat and hydrogenated oil. Check labels before buying products, especially if you have kids. I hope that the vile practice of using cheap hydrogenated oil ends. What we need first is a government that will stand up to the corporations, but instead, we have a government that chooses to side with the corporations, and no matter who wins in 2008, it will stay the same.

I think that any doctor will tell you that people just don't get the exersize today that they got even just one generation ago. And the amount of junk food is probably 10 times more than what our parents had available to them. So everybody got fat. And now watching for bad chemicals in our food is more importent than ever. I'll bet Grandma Brockie never had to watch out for trans fats or hydrogenated oils in her food!

Just a couple of points concerning my parents and food.
My mother always made me eat the burnt crusts on my toast because she said my hair would be lovely and curly.
I went bald at a very early age. Ergo, don`t always believe mom.
My father was a coal miner and every day for all his working life he took four slices of bread with beef dripping and lots of salt, when there was no dripping he took bread and lard with salt.
He died peacefully at 92 years of age
The moral of this is eat what you want as whatever happens, at the end of the day you will probably die, if not tell me what you are eating now!!

California has a volunary ban in effect now which alot of restaurants are participating in. The ban of trans fats doesn't go into effect until 2010 pertaining to restaurant products, and 2011 for baked goods. Just go to the store and pick-up a box of pop-tarts, granola bars, or cookies. they all contain hydrogenated oil.

California has outlawed trans fats, so now our food is healthier and tastes better, it's just a couple cents more expensive.

SilenceNoMore:
I have just recently become aware of all the products that include hydrogenated oil as one of there ingredients. Hydrogenated oil is the cheap way to make products that require oil. It is very bad for the body and I will no longer buy products with this as one of their ingredients. Thanks Morgan for making people aware of how bad hydrogenated oil is for us!
