Imagine your children go to the dock to go fishing and catch a fish with two mouths. This is precisely what the CBC reported yesterday. The news giant said the fish came from Lake Athabasca in Wood Buffalo National Park.

    • Thanks for the update Matthew! I didn't catch that at all. I'm happy to hear the news and will update the post as well.

Greatly appreciate it (and good memory!)

The pipeline giant Enbridge has asked the National Energy permission to transit oil sands by Quebec. Under this project, known Trailbreaker, 230 000 barrels of oil sale would travel daily from Alberta to Montreal, from Sarnia (Ontario). Part of this oil would continue its route to Portland (Maine) to be loaded aboard tankers.

If the project receives the requested authorization, the oil sands will continue their explosive growth.

While we must tackle climate change, we are the hostages of the oil sands. Because of this industry that we have no legislative stronger able to stop the major contributor to pollution by carbon emissions. By 2012, the company Suncor oil sands will increase emissions of a quantity equivalent to the total reductions that Quebec proposes to achieve, thus reversing progress.

Denounce the Trailbreaker. Say "NO" to the oil sands industry. Do not put that Quebec allows oil sale across the province.

Use the form below and we will forward your letters.
      Cher (e) Chief of Party:

The project Trailbreaker proposed by Enbridge that will deliver oil sands sale to Quebec, worries me a lot.

The increase uncontrolled emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) oil sands in Alberta may cancel the efforts of Quebecers to reduce their GHG emissions.

We must reduce our dependency on oil rather than promote the development of dirty oil from Alberta who is more devastating to the environment than conventional oil.

Given the threat posed by the oil sands for our climate and the impact that the transport and refining of oil could have on air quality and water in Quebec, your government 's oppose Does Trailbreaker project?

Please accept my most respectful greetings,

    • That is exactly what I'm waiting for. I'm interested to see what the tests say. They have been finding mercury and chemicals in aquatic life for years, so I fully expect to see something come out in terms of contamination. I'm more interested to see what the levels are and what has changed with this one.

I didn't know that about Goldeye fish! Thanks for the info. I've only ever fished for Jack, trout, whitefish, and perch.

    • It's hard to tell from that picture if it is actually a mutant.
Goldeye's tongues have teeth on them. Their tongues look very much like that "jaw" hanging down. It may be that the tongue is just hanging below the jaw.
Media hype. I'll wait for a biologist's report.

    • As far as I am aware, they dissolve the oil out of the sand with water and pump it from there straight into a holding lake. This is an actually lake that they have pumped the waste water into. Yes, it kills the entire ecosystem and yes they are making more !

    • Their website is http://www.ec.gc.ca/default.asp?lang=En&n=FD9B0E51-1

      ph# is Telephone: 1 800 668-6767 [in Canada only] or 819-997-2800

They are for Environment Canada...I highly doubt anything will change any time soon. For two reasons:

      1. Until the world has come up with an alternative fuel that is both affordable and accessible, they have to get it from somewhere.

      2. Money runs the world. There is no way this government or any government for that matter is going to cut that kind of profit out without some way to replace it.

Bringing attention to it might get it brought up, but I've noticed that several governments like to hand you a candy with the right hand and slap you with the left if you know what I mean.

I am extremely appalled, but like I said in my post the Oil Sands aren't the only culprit. I'm thinking my first plan of action is to clean up my backyard first before I start digging in someone elses'.

    • This the second article on the oil sands that I've noticed in the last two weeks. There is a need to get in touch your government officials. Could you possibly get the phone number for the Parliment switchboard? If so, you could post it and maybe shake the members up. Hopefully after Nov. we will get some control over our public servants.
