Polygamy: the key to a long life?

New research from the University of Sheffield, UK, suggests that, for men, having two or more wives means that you live longer than if you stick to only one. They compared men over the age of 60 across 140 different countries, and found that those in countries that practice polygamy lived on average 12% longer than those from largely monogamous nations.
I just plant the seeds...

I would only do this if one or more of the relationships were platonic; although, this can be as difficult as having multiple sexual partners in our culture.
Furthermore, I think that western normativity influences men into negative relationships and hinders their ability to communicate emotionally. It's not a matter of sleeping with more then one person but having healthy reciprocal relationships. If exclusive polygamist relationships want to have multi-partner sexual relations to further this reciprocation, then let them at it. But, I'm disinclined to promote such relationships. - 1 year ago

Here's an interesting article you might enjoy. It's more about being polyamorous, but it still hits some good points.

Men in todays society dont need longer lives, they need to be taught that the universe does not revolve around them. Women deserve more respect than to have to share a horny, greedy, and unfaithful husband. Most of these cases occur in sects of society with alarming male dominance paired with religious fanaticism. Not a good combination.
With everything going on in the world you would think that the University of Sheffield would have better, more important research topics to spend their money on.

the average lifespan in the US is 77 years for men (or thereabouts it might be decreasing at the moment). why do we need to live any longer, past that your in the old, decrepit senile stage. screw that
I don't have a problem with changing partners but it seems like, if you're committed to someone, you focus on them or you break up. simple as that.

I am sure those are the only determining factors. Maybe with more than one wife, you can be an ass and get away with it for a longer time? I don't get it. Most of us only last a couple of minutes while women can go on and on...shouldn't it be the other way around?? One woman, six husbands. That way, by the time you're ready to go again, your number is just rolling around anyway..LOL

when i first got on myspace , i went through every single country in the world - every one - and sent friend requests to the 2 hottest chics in each one ( if certain criteria were met - if there were only 1 girl from the country on myspace , i'd send her one anyhow , however she looked ) - this took a couple of weeks ( and shitloads of beer ) . i had hundreds of hot chics . it was a project done for a bet . i haven't met a single one of them . but i still look at my virtual harem as a source of pride . in an ideal world we'd all be together .

It is obvious from the Sheffield students theory that none of them are or have been married.
To suggest two wifes is absolutley crazy I cannot imagine the difficulty trying to please two women when they are both selecting the clothes to wear, selecting new shoes, "dose this lipstick look right" or "is my hair ok at the back" or " have you had a shave" or " turn that football off I want to watch Oprah" or " you are getting fat"
The list is endless and I am shuddering at the thought of TWO nagging wifes one is more than enough at times.
Still, I love mine and more important she loves me

PS to all you Christians out there, Jesus said there ain't going to be any marriage in Heaven, that is why the contract reads "until death do you part." And that is exactly what marriage is, a contract.
People should be allowed to make any contract they want with another human being so long as it is mutually consensual.

Have you been reading my arguments for legalizing gay marriage on libertarian bboards?
Governmental Marriage is a property contract, there's no reason to deny anybody the right to enter into a property contract.
There's no need to worry about people marrying horses, they can already visit their horse at the vet, so hospital visitation rights are moot, and horses cannot own property, so there's no problems with inheritance rights.
That we deny people who love each other these rights is insane.

Long Life? Name me a civilization, if one exists today, that has survived based on this morality? It may extend the life of the individual, but the life span of society will decay. But hey, today, we live in a world where we look after number one, when individual rights supercede the greater good. We have made ourselves little-Gods, and for this reason Lucifer was cast down like a bolt of lightening.

I think they should make all kinship family ties legal, two husbands with two wives, one husband with three wives, one wife with three husbands, or a whole tribe of people if that is what they want.
If families want to become corporations with the adult members as the board of directors and all members, including the children, stockholders, then they should be legal too.
I say let families be what they want and need to be. What is blood anyway when it comes to bonding and family? Blood relatives can more easily stab you in the back and steal from you as a stranger can, because with family you aren't expecting it to happen, whereas with a stranger, there is always that idea in the back, maybe way back of your mind that this stranger could mean me harm.
Enough with the binary, black and white, man and woman, left and right, good and evil thinking. Life is a rainbow of colors and shades of gray.

there are rights and there are wrongs. Allowing people to do what they feel is right (apparently) isn't to the betterment of them or those around them.

Polyandry isn't usually exhibited in other great apes unless there is a drop in the female population, and the species of ape under normal circumstances has no social rules regarding sex.
Polygamy however, is exhibited in other great apes, particularly in gorillas.
From an evolutionary standpoint this makes sense.
A female can only reproduce when she is not pregnant, and depending on the gestation period there are long bouts of time when a female is incapable of producing offspring-- she's already got one on the way. She is at capacity for producing offspring.
Having multiple wives increases the total output of offspring for the male, bringing him to capacity for offspring.
While today, men and women are much more than baby-making machines, it wasn't that long ago, geologically speaking that we were swinging from trees.
It makes sense that our culture has evolved faster than our DNA.

Why would the women be in competition?
The Nuclear Family is probably the worst thing that's happened to humans as a species.
It used to be that three and four generations would live under one roof. There was a shared knowledge and culture across generations, children learned skills from their elders, and there were more people around to help raise the kids, and more hands around to help with day to day tasks.
People entering willingly into polygamy would probably find that it balances the responsibilities of running a household over more people, and I think if anything it would reduce stress.
