Are too few of us learning Chinese?

With China's rise in dominance both in the world economy and as a general world player, Shirley Robinson Pippins asks if Western nations are really doing enough to prepare for the future, such as teaching Chinese in schools as opposed to French and German.

What do you think? Should more people be learning Chinese in schools instead of French? I've certainly hardly ever had any use for my French lessons...

    In response to the article's headline: "yes."

    Not to mention that we start language instruction far too late in the United States. 3 years of high school Spanish are not going to cut it in 20 years (or so) for most people on the Pacific Coast and in the American West and South.
