RUMOUR: Apple music subcription service - iTunes Unlimited?
"The service, titled iTunes Unlimited, would run alongside Mobileme and cost $130 a year - you wouldn't be able to subscribe for less time than that. Here are the full details of the tip [linked from Techdigest]:
iTunes Unlimited
- 256 Kbps music; highest quality digital music subscription service ever
- 50% of U.S. store available for iTunes Unlimited at launch, U.S.-only launch
- Available through iTunes or retail box a la MobileMe, funds applied through iTunes gift cards cannot be used towards subscription purchase
- $129.99 stand-alone or $179.99 with MobileMe, current MobileMe subscribers can add iTunes Unlimited for $99.99
- One-year subscription period
- Current a la carte options unchanged
- When signed in to subscription account, "Buy" is "Get"
- "Download and Play throughout iTunes Unlimited Subscription" or "Buy and Keep"
- "Buy and Keep" option available for downloaded subscription songs, purchased version replaces subscription version
- Late October launch with iTunes 7.8"

THis sounds legitimate simply because Apple LOVES forcing people to buy things in year-long increments.
Would I go for it?
Maybe.
Would I do it ONLY for a year? Probably. If I had the option of only doing it for a few months I would perfer that. I'm just interested in sampling music before I buy it. I can't imagine paying that much every year for the next 5 -10 years just for music.
$650 (5 years) just for music? I'm not that much of an audiophile, I guess.

Apple yet again giving the finger to anyone but average computer users by hardcoding everything off.
When are they going to learn that restriction just makes people use other OS's or turn to piracy?
Their itunes format being a great example of that. There are a dozen converters that can bypass it and with itunes alone you could burn your songs onto a cd and then convert them with third party software.
Only people with macs get fucked.

I would be more excited about this if they were offering an mp3 format that we can use with all devices as many times as we want to keep forever. This sounds more like something that will benefit iTunes instead of the consumer.

256 is still compressed compared to cd and Cd is inferior to Vinyl
How about we can buy vinyl widely again, and download the digital stuff for free.
If i could get good quality vinyl i would never listen to digital except on the bus.-

If it allows me to buy music from other countries' stores then I'm in, but if I can't buy all my favorite j-pop songs it's a no go.

What if Apple offered....
Unlimited music AND move/TV rentals?
You can load up your pod with as much music or movies or old episodes of The Office as it can possibly hold.
Now THAT is a subscription service I would gladly pay $130 a year for.
Just music? Eh. Not worth it.
But to be able to download entire Seasons of Battlestar Galatica or Prison Break at no cost?
I'd definitely find that a good deal.
Think they'd ever go for that?

Apple can come up with all kinds of circus features they want, just don't force users to subscribe to anything in 1 year incriments. Give us choices!
256 bitrate is nothing. I want VBR joint stereo and ABR of 256. I still can't believe iTunes is at 128 and iTunes Plus is at 192.
But yes, seriously, those "rented" tracks can be hacked easily.

Seems like a cool idea; i guess it just depends on how much music you normally buy in a year and if you can break even.

It's sounds like some thing that can be of benefit to both parties. Like my Gym membership - procrastination is the name of the game with subscriptions!
