Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona - On a ragged outcrop just a short walk from a Grand Canyon overlook where millions of visitors annually come to gawk at one of the world's most stunning vistas sits the old Orphan uranium mine. Soil radiation levels around it are 450 times higher than normal. It's encircled by a protective fence.
A sign warns: "Remain behind fence - environmental evaluation in progress." In the canyon hundreds of feet below, another sign by gurgling Horn Creek instructs thirsty hikers not to drink its radioactive water. "

This is monstrous. They should not be allowed to destroy our National Treasure.
-
Is there no end to attacks on the environment? This is beyond belief.
Keep your hands off the Grand Canyon when it comes to mining and other invasive and harmful influences.

Another thoughtless money scheme in the proverbial works...Is nothing sacred anymore..? Next they'll be calling it a matter of national security...or are they already..?
Why do we see the mushroom clouds on the horizon..?

Hey, who doesn't use uranium?
We NEED it.. -
Messing with the Grand Canyon could set off a chain of events that would be catastrophic. They're really playing with fire here.

We have no need of nuclear power. Hairdryers and video games don't care whether the electricity they use comes from wind generators, geothermal wells, solar panels, hydroelectric dams or 7-11.

Whew! Thanks JfG!
For a moment I was imagining yellow tape wrapped all the way around the Grand Canyon and a cop saying, "Move along. There's nothing to see here...anymore."
Then again, things can change very quickly on "The Hill". -
of course, making a quick buck is behind this.

God I hope this doesn't happen.
Check out this pod about another way that pits the rich heritage and tradition of the native populations from that area against making money. -
What is so surprising about this? Eventually, most of the earth will be irradiated and only pockets will be safe for human activity - Asimov anyone????

don't know much about how the American public feels about this but i know if it was in Britain we'd start a protest :) government is as mad to even think about destroying one of our national pieces though
-
some things we might not miss so much...this we'd miss big-time. It's not something to screw up; it's something that needs to stay. Just try replicating that one... where else are you going to stand and feel puny and immense at the same time, down to the molecule?

If you only visit 1 Nat’l Park in your life-this is the one. It encompasses everything that the human spirit needs to find its purpose & place in the universe. It’s that powerful-more powerful than all of the uranium it may contain. This sacred place can’t be touched under any circumstances.
With madmen running the country, is it enough to think that a democratic president is the answer to right all of the wrongs committed against & by our once great country? History has shown that when the balance of power has shifted too far to one side, a revolution becomes the only viable option when the masses refuse to be pushed around anymore & expect to take it without finally fighting back the only way they can.

Although Nuclear power is coming to a renaissance now that people are realizing it's a clean and safe power source, uranium mining will never get the go-ahead in the Grand Canyon. Kazakhstan, however, will likely experience an economic boom.
