Study finds half of all food produced worldwide is wasted
The current food crisis we are facing is not one of production, the authors argue, but one of waste. These large quantities of wasted food translate into equally large amounts of wasted water (think "virtual water"); Charlotte de Fraiture, a researcher at IWMI, told ENS that almost half of the water consumed annually to grow food is lost or wasted.

It is also a problem of distribution. A lot of food is destroyed because it is less costly to do so than to distribute it to where it is most needed.

Here's an idea. Take your camcorder or webphone behind a local chain eatery and record the amount of food tossed in the dumpster for a few hours or at the end of the workday.
Post the video on current so we can all witness the mass wastefulness that occurs on a daily basis.
Perhaps, if current gets enough "vids", they'll edit them together into a montage of disposed edible leftovers set to zesty music.
Just a notion.

Many of the supermarkets in my neck of the woods donate unsold food to charity organizations such as shelters for women, refugees, etc., that's something to be encouraged.

And to think, people in Haiti are literally eating F*%@ing dirt! We as a society should collectively be ashamed.... I know I am

I used to be a Cook for a County Jail. I was a first hand witness to mass amounts of food waste. The sad thing about that was that the portion of food given to the inmates was so small and the amount they threw away was so large they could have chosen to give out double rations if they wanted to.
-
This is disturbing. The picture above was probably wasted food from the salad bar alone.
-
it really makes me sad to know the truth about this having worked in the food industry
-
In reality, the ability of humans to project, estimate, the exact desire of other humans precise consumption, at a future mo0ment in time, is a vast mathematical problem. humans preparing and serving food really are not providing a good service, if they run out.

some restaurants put all the food to use, even if its past the expiration date. i didnt know they were just trying to help feed the rest of the world.

You guys also need to think about expiration dates. No one realizes that's just a date the food needs to be off the shelf at the market, not your house. Most foods can last MUCH longer than their "date of expiration," but a TON of people have to continuously have the freshest of the fresh.
Another suggestion- Always get your food to go if you eat out, regardless of amounts left over. If you collect your table's worth, you can make a small meal to give to homeless person. My friends and I do this every time we eat out. Most of the people we give the food to are quite grateful.
-
If we waste so much food why are we so fat?
-
And yet the World Bank will tell us that we need GM foods to feed the world. It's all about $$$$. I am ashamed of my species.

Its sad to think that all of this food is being wasted. Knowing that $20 billion dollars worth is being thrown away, and there are starving people eating dirt, thats nearly enough to feed almost every hungry person on earth.

Waste is waste is waste, whatever the reason. We are blindingly inefficient in every aspect of our daily lives, water down the drain, car left idling, single occupant vehicles all over the roads, and yes we waste food. We have made big strides in food preservation but when is the last time anyone has taken a doggie bag home from a restaurant?? Embarrassing right? Well that's waste too. Everyone should have to live on a farm for an entire year and see how much work and energy it takes to produce a plate of food then maybe we wouldn't be so ready to throw the left-overs away. Food is a gift and that will be best understood when it's replaced with a yearning hunger… maybe for the first time ever!?
-
its very sad to here this but go diner most people eat 1/2 of whats on there plate we do the same thing at home thats what happins when ur not worried about the wnere ur next meal comes from i bet no one in somalia throws food away from there plate

An elderly couple would take the food that a local grocery store would throw out. This couple would give the food to people who were hungry or having a hard time. One day a manager refused them the food! For shame, what was it going to hurt?

one benefit to have emerged from the rise in food prices has been that people may have actually begun paying attention to the amount of food waste they generate each day. hopefully.
