Multi-millionaire film stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie might have received millions of dollars for the first pictures of their newborn twins, but are still eligible for £1,400 a month in French child benefits to help support their six children.
While it is highly unlikely that they will actually claim the government money, it shows how generous the subsidies available to families across the Channel are, where many benefits are obviously not linked to parents' income.
With such strong child support regulations, it is not surprising that France has the highest fertility rate in Europe - with almost two children per woman.
The country heavily subsidises children and families from pregnancy to young adulthood with liberal maternity leaves and part-time work laws for women.
The government also covers some child-care costs of toddlers up to three years old and offers free child-care centres from age three to kindergarten, in addition to tax breaks and discounts on transportation, cultural events and shopping.
