Brits are uncivilised and greedy drunks: Jamie Oliver attacks British culture
The 33-year-old describes his countrymen's obsession with widescreen TVs, cars, mobile phones, and beer as being symptomatic of "the new poverty" blighting the UK.
The comments were made in an interview in the latest edition of Paris Match magazine published in French, in which Oliver contrasts the country with France, where old fashioned customs are still observed.
Commenting on the fact that 80 per of the British do not even bother sitting round a table for dinner any more, Oliver says: "It's true in the centre of London and in the big northern cities. It's linked to the new poverty. It's nothing to do with famine or war - quite the opposite. England is one of the richest countries in the world. The people I'm telling you about have huge TV sets - a lot bigger than mine! - they have state-of-the-art mobile phones, cars, and they go and get drunk in pubs at the weekend - their poverty shows in the way they feed themselves."

And this guy wants to keep his cooking show on the air? It's like shooting yourself in the foot.
-
"Millionaire chef Jamie Oliver has attacked Britain's drinking culture and urged people to forget their troubles by sniffing some really fresh basil.
The Sainsbury's frontman also accused Britain of being obsessed with material goods like mobile phones and iPods, instead of the Tefal Jamie Oliver Series, or one of those rubbish flavour-shaker things."

I think i could cook better than him so this is me sending out the official challenge

I've got a pretty low opinion on most Brits, but you can't write us all off that easily, as for me I'm a generous drunk, so I'm sure I'm not the only brit like that

Like him or not, you have to thank the well-known figure who speaks what he thinks. He has something to lose, but he's not afraid of letting his true thoughts be heard when they can be detrimental to his career.

I don't think sweeping generalisations are a good way to get your point across.
Look at Gwyneth "I could never date an English guy" Paltrow.

the weathly people of brittain eat as well as the wealthy of any other nation, as im sure he knows, the poor people of england however dont eat as well as the poor of othernations, prefering to heat up processed frozen non nutritional crap to cooking basic peastn style food (which incedentally is usually cheaper)
-
I would say calling the Brits uncivilised and greedy is a bit excessive...

It's the same way Americans say Americans are all stupid. It's a gross generalization, but it doesn't mean there's no validity to the point.

"The 33-year-old describes his countrymen's obsession with widescreen TVs, cars, mobile phones, and beer "
To be honest I think that that statement could be applied to a lot of countries, not just Britain.
-
France?
Yeah well I've heard my fair share of how France is no better. If he just stuck to complaining about the UK on their merit alone without comparing to France (of all places) I would have had more respect for his viewpoint.
I still think that he has a valid point....just less of one when commenting to a French magazine on UK not being as cool as France....someone's kissing tale.

Another generalizing statement that accomplishes nothing. Get back in the kitchen and shut up.
-
A general truth. I mean, most people who probably come to current arn't your typical sun reading footy lout anyhow. All i have to do is look outside the pub window im sitting at, while checking my super mobile, on my awsome laptop, while buying shit loads of materialistic things on e-bay, to see that its true. heh.
I just feel privalaged i have the opportunity to work on a good wage to buy these indulgencies. I more think the problem in briton is ignorance. Not one of alcohol. Some of the smartest people i know are drug addled middle class techno whores.

His criticisms are surely generalized and aimed at main stream popular culture (which sounds identical to that which we have in the states), but I don't think it's too harsh. There is no arguing that if we spent more time as a society embracing what could be called 'slow food' than we would no doubt nourish our relationship with each other (and the planet).
-
Those people he is generalizing are becoming a wealthy nation, creating some of the best music, about to host the olympics, creating new fashions, etc...

I'm an American living in Amsterdam and watch BBC when I turn on the television. the British are truly obnoxious people; I'm no big fan of Jamie Oliver but I don't disagree with how he characterizes his countrymen/women. from what I can glean from television newscasts and shows and from when I visit the country, he is NOT off the mark at all.
Americans fascination with all things British really needs to come of age; the accent may be charming; they are NOT.
-
He does have a fair point. It's a generalisation sure, but the UK does have a very predominant drinking culture, more so than a food culture. Growing up there, I noticed that there is a large influence of materialistic thinking that I believe is largely driven by the UK's obsession with American culture. Living in the states now, every time I go home, the country has grown more and more American with plastic facades and fast, convenient food becoming more popular. It is a shame because Britain definitely has some strong traditions in food that should be kept alive, or we could all just go for a pie and chips down the local!

A Most read. Really Jaime is really really good. Americans will never understand it.

Im english and i have to agree with some of his views, we are becoming a country dependent upon technology, and i think that by him actually saying this maybe people will start to understand, at least he had the courage to say what we have all been thinking!

Erm...I kind of agree with Mr Oliver. He is talking about food poverty and the way the British don't really respect food. I know countless people who will eat frozen ready meals all week so that they can afford a new designer shirt.
The fact is that 90% of the British people Mr Oliver is commenting on, will neither care or notice that he is talking about them.

All this coming from a man whose diction and dialect is so bad he requires subtitles when being broadcast on American TV.
