CNet's Declan McCullagh wrote up an informative history of Joe Biden's tech-related voting record--if Biden's name rings a bell, it's because he's the guy Barack Obama picked to be his vice president last Friday night. Maybe you don't care about the doings in Washington, but you may want to know that Biden considers a lot of what you do care about criminal activity. Here's what I'm talking about:

• He asked Congress to spend $1 billion to monitor peer-to-peer activity. (In fairness, much of this is to prevent child pornography, but the tactic is apparently a little blunt.)

• Two Biden bills have been explicitly anti-encryption, because you know, encryption makes it hard for the FBI to read people's e-mails.

• He has expressed support for internet taxes and internet filtering in schools and libraries.

• The RIAA seems to be one of his best buddies: Biden sponsored a bill that would restrict recording of songs from satellite and net radio, and another one that would make it a felony to "trick" a computer into playing back unauthorized songs or running bootlegged videogames. That latter one died when Verizon, Microsoft, Apple, eBay and Yahoo all argued against it.

• Biden was one of just four senators invited to attend a celebration of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act hosted by the MPAA's Jack Valenti and the RIAA's Hillary Rosen, two of American file-sharer's most wanted.

• When he was asked in 2006 about proposing net-neutrality laws, he said there was no need, since any bit-filtering violations would provoke such a huge public ruckus they'd have to hold congressional hearings anyway--and they'd be standing-room only.

So the fact the fact Obama's black makes no difference,
In his heart, he's a politician.

Obama can go fuck himself. (not that i can vote on this either way...)

    • First up, I'm not from america, I'm in europe, so I won't be voting (and he won't be my president)
But the way the outside world views the candidates is very clear
McCain: Old, more of the same, and because he is a republican, probably dumb and racist.
Obama: Democrat, therefore they automatically want him to win, Younger, like a new JFK, Black, showing that maybe America isn't that racist anymore.

Why do you think Berlin went so mad over obama after 8 years of that other idiot, Obama seems like jesus.

So can you see just how disappointing it is when Obama does stuff like this.

Also re the changes, the US already invests billions in science, and the sex issue, isn't that already the defacto state?

In 1997 Tony Blair seemed like a great change....

Also i hadn't had any coffee earlier so maybe my reaction was little ott :-)

    • You didn't make any points at all. Just because you say Obama isn't living up to his slogan doesn't mean that it's true. And if anything, his race and age are more of a harm to his candidacy then anything because we live in a society that is still very racist and one that has this belief that youth breeds ignorance and age breeds wisdom.

During the Vietnam war there wasn't a single person willing to run for President on an anti-war platform. Obama is willing during this war. Thats change.

In a society that is very anti-intellectual, Obama wants invest billions into the advancement of Science and Math and Technology. Thats change.

During this so called "War on Drugs" Obama is willing to come out and say he would legalize medical marijuana and even explore the possibility of investing in hemp production for fuel and fabric. Thats change.

Obama is a pro-choice candidate that wants to explore ways to limit abortion through sex ed and investing in birth control technologies. Thats change.

I could fill this thread with a list of reasons why Obama = Change but it sounds more that you are unhappy with the 2 party state. That you are dissapointed that Obama turned out to be a Democrat. Well, Obama is a Democrat so he isn't going to lean away from his parties platform too much. So if thats your biggest gripe then vote Libertarian or Green or Socialist or don't vote at all. Either way, after November it will either be President Obama or President McCain and I personally feel the Obama/Biden ticket is the dream ticket that I have been waiting for.

    • The only reasons i have seen that you should vote for obama are that he is Black, Younger and his slogan "Change you can believe in".

(Hillary's main reason was because she is female and Mccain because he a "war hero", these are also rubbish reasons)

And i hoped he would be different, he would be a change but he is not. He is just another politician.

The absolutely only change with obama that i have seem so far is his skin colour and youth.
This isn't the move that someone who believes in change makes.
This is a move that shows the complete corruption of democracy the two party system is.

The whole "change" thing really is empty rhetoric.
I'd still have Obama over any Republican any day of the week, but that's hardly the biggest compliment in the world.

I'm not claiming anyone elses work as my own, that's ridiculous.

My point is Obama isn't this breath of fresh air a lot of people including myself hoped he would be.

    • What does Obama being black have to do with anything? You start out this thread trying to make a valid point and then you end it with trying to make it a racial issue and telling Obama to go fuck himself. What did you do, just copy and paste someone else's work and try to claim it as your own?
