Scientists discover why flies are so hard to swat

"Now I can finally answer," says Dickinson, the Esther M. and Abe M. Zarem Professor of Bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).Using high-resolution, high-speed digital imaging of fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) faced with a looming swatter, Dickinson and graduate student Gwyneth Card have determined the secret to a fly's evasive maneuvering. Long before the fly leaps, its tiny brain calculates the location of the impending threat, comes up with an escape plan, and places its legs in an optimal position to hop out of the way in the opposite direction. All of this action takes place within about 100 milliseconds after the fly first spots the swatter.
"This illustrates how rapidly the fly's brain can process sensory information into an appropriate motor response," Dickinson says.

i guess since their brains are smaller their neurons or electrons or whatever don't have a lot of distance to cover. makes sense to me... i guess size DOES matter after all.

So the ones we do kill are the slow-witted ones, talk about survival of the fittest.

If you don't want flies in your home, place pots of mint and of basil on all your window sills. Then you won't have to worry about how fast to swat them. :)

So do the scientists know how they fly in that cunning square shape (I mean the flies, not the scientists)?
I love that we people think we're the best thing since, well, dinosaurs, and then it turns out that flies can think faster than we can. Hehe.

If we had nuclear fly swatters no fly would escape
plus someone told me when we try to swat then they fly backwards - 1 year ago

In case you're planning on designing the fly-swatter that's smarter than the fly brain, you should get familiar with the structure and working of the fly brain with this online atlas and database of the flybrain. No joke... the internet is AMAZING.

That's great! now all we need is a fly-swatter that counteracts that. Mmhmm...

So I guess it would be inaccurate to tell someone they have the brains of a fly when trying to insult their intelligence. Those buggers think fast!

If you were a vampire slayer, you wouldn't even need a fly swatter to kill flies.

One time I was able to shoot a fly with my Nerf dart gun from about 15 feet, unfortunately it was a once in a lifetime feat yet to be duplicated.

And here, I thought they were psychic. Turns out they're just fast.
Where can I get a cushy research job photographing flies & swatters?

While I understand the dislike of flies, I havent killed a fly since we started bombing Iraq. I decided then, I didn't even want to kill a fly.
It's amazing, they land on my screen door and I open the door and let them out. One night a couple weeks ago, I let a fly out and a short time later, one landed on my finger while I was at the sink. I walked to my back door opened it and the fly flew away. My husband laughed, he couldn’t believe what he saw.
Everyone has their quirks and not killing flies is one of mine. I had always heard their peripheral vision was exceptional making them more capable of seeing the swatter coming.

A fly's fabulous eyes doesn't register periwinkle blue. If you have a flyswatter this color, you are the champion of the world. In Europe, they paint doorways that color for preemptory fly strikes.
