Former president Jimmy Carter called Republican presidential candidate John McCain a "distinguished naval officer," but he said the Arizona senator has been "milking every possible drop of advantage" from his time served as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Over the years I have taken more flak about this man's presidency than any of my political views. This good person tried to do what Barak is saying he will do. Changing the national political scenario from a good ol' boys club into a functioning government will be a Herculian task. Sen. Obama would do well to have him on his staff in any capacity. Oh yeah, any one with a modicum of common sense knows that Mcsame is a blowhard. We are all gratefull for his service to our country but as any vet worth his salt will tell you, that is not a qualification for POTUS..

I'm a vet. Will EVERYONE stop telling me McCain is a hero? So far, I haven't seen ANY evidence that he is a hero from anyone other than McCain's election campaign staff.
I did see an article from some other POW's held in the same place he was, their opinion of McCain was pretty low----and they called him a lot of things, hero was not among them.

All I know is that McCain has opposed, delayed, voted against, or was absent and did not vote at all on bills that concern veterans affairs 80% of the time.

Maybe he was a hero in Viet Nam, I don't know, I didn't see him---but he sure as hell is no veteran's hero in Washington.

Obama has a MUCH better record of support the needs of veterans.

Everyone in this country has ties to it in some way, and McCain's is that he served and was a POW. Unfortunately thats pretty much of it for his ties to the average working class America. Other than that he has lived his life in wealth and luxury. He cant say that in an ad.

A fellow Vietnam POW of McCain's warns of the candidate's "quick and explosive temper" and suggests McCain is exaggerating his imprisonment.

That link is well worth everyone's time to read, kadugen.

The part that really caught my attention was this gem:

"...In fact he barely managed to graduate, standing 5th from the bottom of his 800 man graduating class."

Not exactly Commander-In-Chief material by the looks of it.

If you can barely graduate the Naval Academy and ranked nearly dead last out of 800 men, what dose that say about your military credentials?

Not exactly in the same league as, say, Collin Powel -- is he?

Now add to that McCain is standing by Bush's military "strategy" in Iraq even though it has been discredited by literally everyone in the military as utterly moronic.

This man just doesn't have what it takes to be President.

I would have grave reservations about putting him in charge of a Burger King!

That's a strange arguement when every speaker at the DNC Convention before they attacked McCain first complimented his service to his country and his love for his country. The Republicans will not be as gracious toward Obama.

He talks too much and thinks he's opinion should hold weight.

If people think that people put too much stock in Regan then they need to just see how much is placed in this man right here.

As I have respect for him serving in the Navy, let's discuss what's happening now with our troops and the issues at hand.

Jimmy Carter was a good president. He had the Republican attack dirty tricks cut their teeth on his administration.

I think if Carter was a politician today he would have been Republican, look at it, a bible thumping baptist from Georgia

I respect Jimmy Carter and his opinion, his record speaks for itself, he was to honest, and honesty and politics have a hard time existing together. He is right about McCain and the prisoner of war routine and I hope it becomes a non issue soon. Just because he were captured by the enemy does not make him capable of leading the United States of America. In fact he would be as bad a bush and Co. if not worse. Bush is just evil, McCane is evil and senile.

I remember the Carter days... yep, our people held by Iranians, gas shortages, high interest rates... it wasn't until Reagan got to office that the Iranians released our people, the gas supply suddenly returned, and the interest rates came down. It's history folks, plain and simple. Can we learn from our past, or are we doomed to repeat it?

It occurs to me that humans are too alarmingly fond of glorifying War, and the people who serve in armed conflicts between Belligerents. Calling McCain a War Hero will never make him one. That man is no Audi Murphy. War is not only about money and property for those not risking anything...Or Patriotism... War is about wounding, maiming and dying for individuals, families and most especialy the Countries who morph into FASCISM because they are no longer in control of themselves. We
quickly forget that God created us to be 1/2 animal &
1/2 Deific, then left us to choose which we liked best.So
since what goes around comes around, once we get the taste of blood we develop an addiction for it. Even sader,
it doesn't stop there.War is untimately about Death and what exists beyond Death. So those who are alive & whole, physicaly & psychicly can say all they like about McCain being a War Hero in Vietnam, but all too many of those who TRUELY are, are buried there, and can't have their say. And they're the lucky ones. Those who are still living as the true War Heros of Viet Nam are likely so traumatized that they won't say. Humans always forget that the TRUTH is always the 1st causalty of War because War is the greatest invention the Devil ever trotted out. So the Truth remains a paradox to human fallacy. The religious people can talk for hours on end about the life after death but can't know because they're alive. Only the dead can know, but can't say . Typical.
I started my first job in Journalism helping my
brother deliver newspapers on his route. The Viet Nam war was escalating out of control by the time I had my own paper route. But since I was an independent contractor at 12, and took all my own risks as a businessman, I always read my newspapers, then thought deeply about what I'd read. Reading about
the body counts and the atrocities from the CIA who
were not Journalists, but who were distributing most
of the information disseminated to control the public's
mind to control the public's will to continue the War
didn't interest me. Because there was no Tass in Pravda or Pravda in Tass. 1964 was already "1984" So when
ever I could ,I sought the real Journalism to find the
Truth. I found the Truth in shocking photography taken after the atrocities occuring in the A Shau valley where
North Vietnamese regular Army troops were pitted
against American servicemen. And stories of N.Viet
Namese officers beheading their own wounded to put
them out of their misery( because they had no medical facilities to care for them), saying "He has served his purpose and has died for the Fatherland" Fascism has no homeland and no time limit. It's a highly contageous
diease of criminal insanity that uses the same words in
Nazi Germany equaly as in Asia. I deeply repect the Journalists like Geraldo Rivera et al who risked their lives as unarmed non combatants who went to Viet Nam to bring us the Truth. That took real courage. They are the Heros every bit as much as the men & woemen
whose valor saved lives with or without risk to their
own. Because you see, Viet Nam was the first of the
endless 1984 Wars. It was a 1984 War because you
could sit in your living room and abstractly view war
without being in War as if you were God, while those
who would sell you War with commerical sponsorship
skated away unscathed after fomenting War for Oil
to develop Plastic packaging for their products. I can
never forget the horrific carnage I saw because I am
still traumatized to it. And I only saw it in photography.
Pity the poor souls who can never stop reviewing that
Hell on Earth in their P'.T.S.D.'d minds like the ultimate
horror movie they can't escape from like Audi Murphy.
"Show me a Hero, and I'll show you a Tragedy" is what
was said about Audi Murphy, a true American Hero.

Let's just let everyone know what actually happened to John McCain:

John McCain was flying his "23rd" bombing mission over North Vietnam, when his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi. McCain fractured both arms and a leg, and then nearly drowned. After he regained consciousness, a crowd attacked him, crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt, and bayoneted him. Lieutenant Commander McCain was then transported to Hanoi's main Hoa Lo Prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton"

McCain spent six weeks in the hospital while receiving marginal care. Now having lost 50 pounds in a chest cast, and with his hair turned white, McCain was sent to a different camp on the outskirts of Hanoi into a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live a week. In March 1968, McCain was put into solitary confinement, where he would remain for two years.

In mid–1968, McCain's father was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, and McCain was offered early release. The North Vietnamese made that offer because they wanted to appear merciful for propaganda purposes, and also wanted to show other POWs that elites like McCain were willing to be treated preferentially.McCain turned down the offer of repatriation; he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well.

In August 1968, a program of severe torture began on McCain. He was subjected to rope bindings and repeated beatings every two hours.

Altogether, McCain was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five and a half years. He was finally released from captivity on March 14, 1973.

I think he has every right to remind people of what he went through Jimmy. Could you be more offensive and unappreciative towards him and soldiers like myself.

Carter is one of themost irrelevant ex presidents, and worse when he was in office, we ever had. 18% mortgage rates, gas shortage lines, unemployment, high taxes, helped the mideast terror groups get started. Very intelligent guy (Naval Academy grad, nuclear power I believe) and a nice guy but a DISASTER as a president. He needs to stay in Georgia, raise some more peanuts and stop making stupid comments but I guess that is too much to hope for.
