The 23 year old soldier, third in line to the throne, had a successful first tour of duty in the war zone earlier this year.
Now he is desperate to go back for another encounter with hostile Taliban forces.
Last year the Ministry of Defence struck a deal with the media to allow Harry the chance to fight in secret.
However it is thought this arrangement was a one-off that is unlikely to be repeated.
The source added: “Once again it is the powers-that-be who will decide if Harry can have his wish.
“Again, the issue is whether his mere presence in the theatre of war will make his men an added target for the Taliban.
