One Alaskan asks: what is McCain thinking?

Is this a joke?; That seemed to be the question du jour when my phone started ringing off the hook at 6:45am here in Alaska. I mean, we are sort of excited that our humble state has gotten some kind of national nod - but seriously?Sarah Palin for Vice President? Yes, she is a popular governor.
Her all time high approval rating hovered around 90% at one point. But bear in mind that the 90% approval rating came from one of the most conservative, and reddest-of-the-red states out there.
And that approval rating came before a series of events that have lead many Alaskans to question the governors once pristine image.

How do you like the cowgirl image of her shooting wolf and polar bears from the air? What sportsmanship. I would be ashamed to support her.

I thought when you pick a running mate you were supposed to pick someone with the credentials the job requires. This is political pandering of the worse sort, not a good choice if you want to intice independent minded female voters. I'm not going to vote for a woefully underqualified VP just because she is a woman. Come on. Give me credit for having a brain. And what is with picking someone who is in the middle of a political scandle in her home state? Was that not what the process of vetting was supposed to be for?

maybe she just had the least dirt of the other potential VP picks. or maybe they really thought her anatomy would overshadow any other blemishes?

With any luck maybe the press will dig up some dirt on her. A video of her clubbing baby fur seals or shooting baby polar bears.

Isn't it a bit insulting for her to even mention a GLASS CEILING? Then call Hillary a whiner?
It's sort of like saying:
"Well the woman you voted for didn't win or get picked for VP so I'm giving you another one of her species to make you not notice. Well they're both womenfolk, ain't they? Just like my Cindy. Ain't she purty? Carol used to be purty too 'fore the accident don't cha know."It's like a sitcom move where the dad runs over the kid's dog. He goes out and gets another dog and thinks the kid won't notice. What an insult this is to womankind.
Oh, I forgot--polar bears are not facing extinction. You can just git a brown bear and spray paint him white. Has she not seen those poor creatures dying off? Oh, I forgot, global warming is not the work of man. That I guess will be addressed when a full creationist agenda is mandated in all schools.
And I think the VPs office should be a place to get back at your ex in laws.
Someone said it well here The old guy's got a sense of humor.

Off the three, Obama, Biden and McCain, she is the only one with any management experience. Obama has been in the Senate longer than Palin has been a governor but he really has done nothing except pander to the corrupt United Nations and run for president. He has no experience in running anything. Biden is, well, just a waste of oxygen. Palen, as a supporter of the Second Amendment stands up for the Bill of Rights far more than Biden. Neither one of these two fools bring anything more than more elitism and arrogance to Washington. We have that in abundance, don't need more. The only change the Dem ticket brings to this country is more socialism.
McCain, in one swoop has minimized Comrade Obamas speech. I was not impressed with the content of that speech but I was with the delivery. Palen is a breath of fresh air. Her biggest failing is that she is an ordinary person. Didn't go to Yale of Harvard. She doesn't have years spent in D.C. screwing up the country. She actually has taken on and fought corruption at the state government level, even in her own party. She dismissed the state police escort and got rid of the private jet. The fact that she is not an arrogant elitist actually works to her disadvantage for the V.P. slot as we seem to be attracted to people with tdhat personality trait. In short, she doesn't appear to be a ruler like Obama and Biden.
McCain, not my choice for president but unfortunately that seems to be the only choice, has proven that he is the only candidate for change. He has gone against Bush and now nominated a Washington outsider.Obama who?????

McCain was thinking, "How can I counter the minority vote and capitalise on the undecided female votes who were vying for Clinton... I know, let's pics a female running mate."
In my opinion, he just won the election.

The republican party thinks that if they have a woman on the ticket for VP that all the women voters and Hillary supporters will now flock to them and vote for her. "WRONG!" They (the republicans) just dont get it. People supported Hillary because of her ideas and vision of the future, not because of her sex.

If yu are a Hillary supporter and you are voting for McCain and Palin, than you are not at all for the Democratic parties values and ideals, you are ONLY interested in a feminist issue. MCCain is another George Bush, Palin is FOR BIG OIL and she sued environmentalists for wanting to protect polar bears because she wants to drill where they live which is the Arctic Wildlife Reserve. I am a woman and I love Hillary, but to vote for McCain is slicing your own throat and it IS a vote for Bush Cheney. If you are voting for McCain because you are angry that Hillary didn't get it, than your support for Hillary is not at all about Democrats issues, it is ONLY about her being a woman and what does that have to do with the crisis we are in as a nation?? Nothing. If you are voting for MCCain because he chose a woman for VP, look beyond the obvious, he ONLY did it to get your vote to push the Bush agenda because she is alll about BIG OIL. Hillary did everything she could and Bill, to tell the message that we must get a Democrat in the White house and to pull together. So what is your real agenda? Is it real social issues and bringing people together and changing the course of America or is it sour milk that a woman isn't the candidate? I don't understand the Hillary supporters that are going to vote for McCain, it makes NO sense to what the Democratic party stands for at this time in History. I love Hillary Clinton, but her time is not over at all, to vote for McCain because your candidate isn't picked is really short sighted. Obama and Hillary want the same things, they are just 2 different people.

"What was McCain smoking?" is word-play on the title "What was McCain thinking?"
It has nothing to do with Dan Rather. It's only in your head that it does.
In future put down that hookah pipe and try to read what's in front of you.

Politics is never going to be boring with this intelligent, tough, and good looking Lady.
This is a real woman. Attack her at your own risk. She takes no prisoners, and goes for the juggler.
Now we have someone to speak for the silent majority. It's been a long dry spell since the days of Reagan, but this Lady will lead us to the Oasis.

even fifty cents could be governor of Alaska. Heck, the city of Long Beach has approximately the same population as does Alaska. I can easily digest news of the mayor of LA runing for VP, but Palin!. She makes Bush seem like a genius. I will rather take four more years of Bush/Cheney, if the constitution would allow it, than live in an America under the administration of Mcain/Palin. With what criteria do we begin to compare the experience/intelligence level of an individual who was once president of the Havard Law Review, and another, who is the governor of Alaska, pop 600,000. With huge natural gas and oil reserves, and thanks to oil again, a state budget surplus, Alaska quite frankly, presents no challenge for any average individual to gorvern.

I'd like to see this one get some facetime. Please give it an up vote if you deem it worthy. The Alaskan point of view in this is interesting.
As Vierotchka stated, there are some great links to other stories as the McCain search for a VP began to look toward the great Northwest.
On this thread I am going to post a few other pictures I found.

Well, I'll definitely say you haven't been paying much attention to our presidential election. (As far as Biden, at least.)
Biden's been in the senate for over thrity years, chairs the foreign relations committee, and is a expert on the middle-east. He was also ran for president this year, in which he displayed his intelligence and wisdom over months of nationally-televised debates.
Palin was on the city council and mayor of a small town in Alaska, and recently became governor. She was truly a strategic, surprise pick, with talks of McCain meeting her only a handful (one?) of times.
