Some UK police officers are so overweight they can only transport a single suspect in their squad cars.Tests found some police vehicles carrying two hefty officers are within 14 stone of legal weight limits, which means they can only carry one suspect in the back of the car. If two people are arrested, the officers would be obliged to call another vehicle.
The Liberal Democrats have now called for all officers on the beat to be subjected to an annual fitness check-up and given a desk job if they fail. Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne said: "Frontline policemen must be fit enough to do their job properly. Free gyms for officers and fitness tests will help ensure our police are a match for the yobs and criminals who blight our neighbourhoods."
Paul Davis, of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: "It's right that officers on the front line should meet an agreed fitness standard but side lining those who fail to reach it is not the answer to the problem."

i dont understand how this is a problem to begin with. police officers should be required to be fit and within the appropriate BMI..why doesn't the police force care?
