Hmm, it's called freedom of expression, and it's something we should defend. PS: Jesus was a man, so he must have had an erection at some point, especially in order to have all those kids...
-
Well, I couldn't find an image of the statue in question. I did find one of Terence Koh's other works, so aptly titled "Big White Cock". It's on display at Saatchi. Here's their write-up on the piece:
"Crowing with early-hour neon glory, Terrence Koh’s Big White Cock is everything its title suggests! Illuminating with greasy innuendos of back-alley sex shops and mega-bucket chicken shacks, Koh’s electric sign pulsates as a high-design icon glamorising the art of slumming it. Addressing issues of race, gender, and sexuality, Koh turns the coded language of sub-culture into a fetishised logo of duplicity. In sexual terms a ‘chicken’ may be a gay teen or Chinese prostitute, but sometimes a cock is just a rooster!"
Art is made to move people, to make them question, to expand their perceptions, to have an effect on the way they think. Sometimes, some art is going to offend some people. But if we let a vocal minority get away with censoring art, the majority loses. Suing art galleries for displaying something that they doesn't fit a specific set of morals is a violation of freedom of expression. Full Stop.

I would consider this to be blasphemous, for Jesus Christ was not just a man but God incarnate. This is nothing new, for Christ was persecuted and crucified because He was God in Flesh. Now is this statue Jesus, by no means no. I don't pray to a statue of wood, but implied behind this 'Art' is a heart of foolishness. I'm sure the artist will try to put some humanistic theological slant, but if you make a statue of me with an erection if would consider it mockery of me. I understand that some cultures see the erection as power, but in the western culture erections are hidden. I have no pity for the fool who mocks God.

I have to say that I have seen far 'worse' and much more effective blasphemous art works, but it is still ridiculous to sue a gallery only because they decide to display a piece. Why would Jesus NOT have an erection? He was meant to be human after all!!!

I think the artist is on a sticky wicket there... so to speak...

Well, kudos to technogeek, for turning this into a point of pride, citing the history of religious persecution for early christians.
However, I must press the question, what has censorship to do with being a good Christian? Censoring any kind of expression, be it childish whatever, seems far off from the principles of faith. If this artist was to show up at my church, even if she brought her statue, should I make it my goal to point out the sty in her eyes?
I am not one to throw any stones, but I would think that she has a distinctly individual and comically bold point of view that some will relate to and learn from, while others might learn more about themselves.

Jesus was a guy (If he even exsisted that is). He had morning wood. He got an erection when he saw someone he was attracted to. I think Christians have just gotten so good at bitching that now they will bitch at anything. Would the Christians get upset to show Jesus taking a shit? Or puking? Or being breast fed by Mary? Or masterbating? If he was a real person these are all things that would have happened because they are all things that humans do. And no magician calling himself the son of god is above it.
-
This is really really unnecessary and people should understand there is no need to tackle something like the Image of Jesus. If you are not Christian that is fine!!! But there is no right that allows you to do this because it would break my right of having my Religion respected.
Screw you if you even tolerate this.
-
Im not going start worrying until the Christians start sending suicide bombers after street markets or flying airliners into buildings.
Right now that behavior is reserved for members of the religion of pieces... or is it the religion of peace... with all the people blowing themselves up I get the 2 mixed up.

Boo hoo.

Why are we discussing religion? Should we not be critiquing the quality of the art? It is in an art exhibit!
I find the work disproportionate; it gives an overwhelming sense of power to have such a large penis. Most carpenters do not sport so much wood.
Regarding the people who do not like this work of art; do not go to the gallery; do not purchase it for your home; do not interfere with the creative expression of artists.

You turn me on.

This is utterly ridiculous!!!! This world is going to hell in a handbasket and no one cares or seems to notice. Everyone better take heed as to the future of this world. When people can accept the so-called "art" of JESUS with an erection, there is something very, very wrong with this country. I am a Christian and I am disgusted that this is being tolerated. All I can say, is people will have to answer for their actions and shall we take a guess who they will be answering too!!!!!

Yet it was Christians like you, tylernative, that saw nothing wrong with the far more offensive cartoons against Islam and Mohammed...

As a catholic, I feel that everyone try to use the image of Jesus for their benefit. (Jesus is my homeboy tee's) As an artisit, I feel that differnt point of views should be respected. Now this is going to be a sensation and everyone is going to know the artisit who did it. But before you know it will be tommorrow's news. So you can either embrace it or forgot about it.
-
Well, gee, if Christ was divine and not human as the Catholic Church has been trying to sell us since the Council of Nicea, why did he even need or have a penis? The absurdity of some is just downright funny at this point. He was a man ( more than likely married considering his heritage and the times he lived in) and I am sure had all the feelings any other human man has. This artwork I believe strives to depict that humanity. Since when is human not divine or vice versa? Who is anyone to judge? Suing over a statue. People definitely have way too much time on their hands these days.
-
Not only does it not even look like a penis, it's displaced!! It's too low -- looks like something he's holding between his knees.... let's do better than that, people... lol
-
Chill out people. It's art. If you don't like it don't look at it. Don't we have starving kids to feed, wars to end and diseases to cure?

"To point at the moon a finger is needed, but woe to those who take the finger for the moon... "
There are two types of Christians. The idolaters who indulge in a personality cult and worship Jesus, and the true followers who concentrate on the teachings of Jesus.
