Matt Welch is a journalist, blogger, pundit and a libertarian. Since 2008, he has been the editor-in-chief at the monthly libertarian journal, Reason. Recently (from 2006 to 2007), he was an editorial page editor for the Los Angeles Times. He has written a portrayal of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, from a libertarian perspective. In McCain: The Myth of a Maverick, Welch argues that a McCain presidency would advance a statist agenda.

I'm becoming queasy from all the buzz about this subject... or is the chicken I had for lunch?
I just can't stand McCain supporters talking about how he's a maverick. True mavericks don't embed themselves in the status quo for 28 years.

non posso credere che il popolo americano sia stupido

Based on the hideously inadequate vetting process, I'd say that she was a desperate decision pushed through by Karl Rove.
-
"Shock and awe" of the political kind. Desperate to say the least. How many Ripusoffican's would really want to go down in flames with mcSame Bush policies?
Her school team didn't name her what they say for the reasons suggested by the Ripusoffican party and their media flunkies.
There's another reason "teenage" boyz call a chick "baracuda". Talk about living in the past - and not the real one at that.

Why hasn't any of the GOP speeches included the economy, middle class, health care, or Afghanistan....you know...the Issues that Matter!!!
-
It's because they don't really care about those issues... They don't call it the Greedy Old People's party for nuthin'...

I think the controversy over Palin should not have lasted more than a day. 1) it takes out eyes of off McCain and how out of touch he is. 2) it takes our eyes off of what the bush administration is doing at the present time while we are all worried about Palin. I mean don't be too surprised if he throws us into another war before the election. 3) are we paying attention to Dick's trip to Azerbaijan? 4) are we coming up with a way to make sure the votes at election time are accurately reported. For instance the same number of people going into a booth equals the same number of votes coming out 5) I dislike her because in her speech she tried to put FEAR back into the american people, and fed people crap about government should be about challenging the status quo. Ha, she won't be challenging the status quo she'll be doing her best to keep it the same 6) I'm sorry but if there's no ice because of global warming her hockey mom years were a waste of time. We've got to make sure this ticket is not elected.
-
Sadly, there is momentum to the news about her detractors and about her supporters. This momentum does take away from McCain's flip-flopping and unworthiness but if the vetting process proves her to be the lightweight she really is, it could help in the long run.
Right now, however, it is more of the McSame where polarization reigns supreme.

...più che di scelta sbagliata.. credo che puntino sullo spot commerciale ... l'intero discorso della Palin alla convention era un spot pubblicitario privo di contenuto politico...
... rather than wrong choice .. I believe that they bet on the commercial spot... the entire speech of the convention Palin was a commercial spot devoid of political content ...

reckless, too much ‘swagger’. Use of pittbull with lipstick was swagger. George W. had a lot of swagger, not much ethics. That hasn’t worked out so well for the country. Pitbulls are not known for leadership, they are most often associated with aggressive behavior, banned in some communities. If I’m given the choice of a Country Organizer vs. possibly vicious dog with lipstick, I’ll take the Organizer.

jdalston, Oh my, where to start? Being an American who loves my country doesn't mean I have to throw my hand in the air and support reckless government. Attacking another country for 911 wasn't good government, it was reckless and I was one of the first to post, NOT IN MY NAME, AMERICAN! I felt compassion for ordinary Iraqis. They had not killed one American, yet had to live through American SHOCK AND AWE. I could imagine how it would feel to be a refugee, because their leader wasn't popular in America. They hadn't attacked us! George W. had to use fake documents and fixed facts to mislead Americans into Iraq. Sorry, but that was a sad time in American history.
I don't thank God for George W.. I'm afraid we will end up paying the price for George W.s war policies. I wish George W would have used his BRAINS instead of his BALLS. Granted there are some loyal pittbulls, but many are trained to attack by people who are trying to prove they have balls, using a hard to control dog. Many in Cleveland use pittbulls to prove they have balls, they have to have special insurance to make sure they keep their balls (pittbulls) in check.
Im not proud of what George W. did after 911. He used it to put his agenda in place, he didn't give Iraqis freedom, he instilled fear in every Iraqi child born after our Shock and Awe. He took away the childhood of innocent Iraqi children, because other people flew planes into buildings in America. Iraqi children are paying a price for 911? Doesn't make me proud! 911, 911, 911? Don't use Iraq and 911 and expect me to throw my hands in the air and say yeeeee ha. SAD! SAD! SAD! FACTS MATTER!

I do not know, if we will ever know how are things really go.certainly:
the rest of the world has seen the fact as:
... no one is untouchable.USA has been in its history a reality much beloved by most of the rest of the world.
.. now, thanks to W., after a certain international politics is hated by many parts of the world.
Is it not better to be loved being hated?
Why Russia with China and … are trying to rebuild a power antagonist?
I think it is wise, at this historic moment, give much attention to international politics in choosing the president and his vice. -
I just had to repost this "outside" the "reply to jdalston" area.
His attitude is exactly how Bush got away with his charade for 8 years.
Conniepae, you are 100% right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought that all those people who believed there was a connection between 9-11 and Iraq had finally understood that there was none.
jdalston is living proof that there are still dumb and gullible people who have no proof of that connection but out of sheer stupidity and some misplaced sense of loyalty to a president who has lied over and over and over and who refuses to testify under oath!
Look at the way he tries to sound intelligent by typing the word "whom" in his post. It matters not to him that he misuses the word. It is just something he thinks makes him sound more intelligent.
People like that can listen to an oxycontin addict like Lush Rimbaugh and actually think what he is saying is the truth. Why would anyone put faith in the ravings of someone who actually took so much of the drug that it caused him to lose his hearing?
He still has not fully recovered from that drug-induced hearing loss and may never fully recover,
The stupidity of uninformed and gullible Americans blindly following charlatans like Bush and McCain is what will eventually cause the collapse of the United States.
Bush and Cheney have put us on a course of fiscal irresponsibility while they laughably and wrongly associate big government and big spending with Democrats.
Listen, jdalston, I'd lots rather have not attacked Iraq and gone completely after Bin Laden in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It would have saved us a TRILLION dollars and would have caught the terrorists responsible for 9-11 without killing half a million innocent Iraqis through collateral damage and we could have paid for health care for our own people.
Instead YOU and the people LIKE you made it possible for an unqualified and dishonest president to wreck our world image, kill millions of innocent people, wink as his cronies fleece Americans, ruin the economy, send the price of gas through the roof and saddle our children and grandchildren with crippling debt for decades to come.
Those who voted for Bush are bad enough but those like YOU who both voted for him and who are too dumb or too brainwashed to see him for the liar he is are simply UNFORGIVABLE.
I'll use a line used by brainwashed people like you when referring to warrantless wiretapping: If you've got nothing to hide, then you shouldn't be worried about wiretapping to catch terrorists."
If Bush and Cheney have nothing to hide then why won't they testify under oath? Don't put forward the WEAK excuse that it is for national security reasons. (The testimony could be given in front of a secret panel with top secret security clearance AND things like Rove's interference in the Federal Judge scandal were NEVER about National Security so that dog won't hunt, pal.)
The REAL REASON they won't testify is they learned that if Nixon had not taped everything, he could have probably beaten the Watergate rap. They FEAR what testimony under oath would reveal about their crooked activities and that is the TOTAL and ENTIRE reason they want to avoid testifying.
It must be nice to live in such a simple world as you do where thinking is not required, jdalston. At least when the country collapses you won't be troubled by thinking about why you blindly followed George Bush or John McCain.

Inofullwell, the same reason they destroyed their emails, the ballots in Ohio, torture tapes, the list goes on. They destoy the evidence in plain sight. No accountability for their actions. Nothing to see here, move along?
Of course there is nothing to see, they have destroyed the evidence. One would think that in itself would be a crime, not a virtue.

sarha is the best move john could have made... and the best thing for his country! she is a great women, humen and american! if you need more proof just look her up!

MSQUINN, If Dick Cheney has taught us anything, it is VICE PRESIDENTS MATTER! Dick Cheney put a "cloud" over the White House, as stated by Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. That "cloud" hasnt gone away, its just not talked about. We are at a turning point. George W. has labeled himself a "decider", which is a heartbeat away from a "DICTATOR".
From what I understand, Sarah Palin and John McCain are trying to put a "cloud" over the investigation going on in Alaska. They are hiding as much as they can. We need some sunshine in America. The "clouds" have got to go!
-
Shes a disaster, reckless choice.
-
In retrospect the selection of the lipstick decorated pitbull it is turning out to be a brilliant one.
According to the current polls they are swinging towards McCain due entirely to Palins gung ho approach to politics.
This is taking the attention of the bumbling ramblings of McCain. BEWARE! You must not let this be allowed to happen. When you think John McCain automatically link his name with G.W.Bush then reconsider Palins contribution in a different light

JDalston, the fact of the matter if it wasn't for the foresight that Clinton administration had about terrorists bush would have been in deep shit, and its well known fact that our military was ready.
