Medical marijuana's eco boomtown

Image...
It's estimated that $143 million in medical marijuana sales have netted $11.4 million in state and local taxes annually, based on registered businesses, California State Board of Equalization spokesperson Anita Gore said. And those estimates are small compared to a 2006 report co-authored by California NORML state coordinator Dale Gieringer, which said that Californians consumed between $870 million and $2 billion worth of medical marijuana per year.[more]

Now California depends on that tax revenue; They're hooked on weed. Just like me!

I thought the figures were near $ 2 billion worth of medical marijuana per year in California.

There could be even more profits if more cities would adopt programs similar to Measure Z.

Humboldt County is tew awesum, Arcata is the only town to not allow the Patriot act!
I just recently got some excellent medication of the purple variety from Mendocino county, much love to Northern Kali!
Is the limit on plants there still 99 per Dr. Rec?

    Nice post!

Once the politco's see a money maker they will make it legal, greed will set in and they will realize that it is a useless battle the DEA fights and they can make money instead of lose it. Mother nature is not additive, nor harmful and the plant itself has many benefits for mankind. It is time to leaglize Mother Nature. The will, they are smelling money and Mother Nature is sending some nice smoke signals.

if the government legalized marijuana and taxed it like they're doing in CA, we could quite possibly make a dent in the billion dollar deficit we have right now.

If we legalized marijuana nationally, we could pay off the federal deficit, fund college for everyone, and pave the roads in gold!

Ending the War on Drugs by legalizing and regulating distribution controlled substances (e.g., alcohol) ends the drug war violence here and abroad. Thus, it is a good thing.

This is bogus. Drug addiction is not cool and profiteering from it is even worse. Some people comment that the tax revenues the government could raise would be a good thing. Its not. I am a medical marijuana patient in the LA area and I can tell you what government having a vested in interest in medical marijuana leads to, HIGHER PRICES! Half the cost of the medication is because of taxes in California. As much as marijuana helps me deal with things, I feel like a total junkie when I spend so much of my limited cash on what I used to be able to get on the street for a fraction of the cost. Street prices dramatically jumped when the industry was institutionalized a few years ago. Government should not encourage this dependence.

No one is advocating drug addiction or misuse or distribution to minors, etc. To take a play out of the libertarian handbook, we should legalize, regulate distribution and tax accordingly using alcohol or nicotine as models (both of these kill far more persons/year than marijuana use). (Has anyone died of a marijuana overdose this year? Any other year?) Surely a medical marijuana patient should know the difference between use and abuse.

If more people cared about this issue both prices and tax rates could be limited to ameliorate the very real problem of cost noted above. C'mom people, the prison society has to end if we are to address the real causes of addiction and misuse.
