The unemployment rate soared to a nearly five-year high in August as employers trimmed jobs for the eighth straight month, the government reported Friday.

The unemployment rate rose to 6.1%, the highest level since September 2003. That's up from 5.7% in July and 4.7% a year ago.

In addition, the economy suffered a net loss of 84,000 jobs in August, according to the US Department of Labor, compared to a revised reading of a 60,000 job loss in July.

The US economy has lost 605,000 jobs so far this year.

    I'm 6.1% pissed off.

Thanks to NAFTA which was signed into law in December by Bush senior right before he left office. He is a crook just like the sons he bore. Then Bush junior tried to get agreements with central America and has not had alot of luck, thank God, he and his father's reputation preceeded him. People like Chavez see right through the screwing the Bush's and the corporations are giving anyone they can and want no part of it. Smart people. The entire Bush clan has raped America Father and Sons, Jeb, Neal and the Junior. The worst part is in the meantime the number of American poor and unemployed and banckrupcies are increasing. While the Bush's and thier friends fill thier coffers on the back's of middle class America.

Jobs going away and we havn't even raised taxes. I guess that huge tax cut for the rich over the last 8 years has really helped the economy. The republicans think were stupid.

Terrible news for americans but good news for the rest of the world.

As your unemployment soars and your children start to starve you will start to get angry. This anger will make you look for someone to blame. Although you should blame yourselves you will start to blame those you elect.

You will slowly start to organize and fight back against these corrupt politicians and hopefully you'll all be a little more selective with who you give launch codes to.

Which would be great news for the rest of the world.

I hope not too many of your children need to die agonizing preventable deaths before this happens.

Besides just general horrible unemployment there is also under employment and, what I like to call, wrong employment. I went to art school, have only ever wanted to be an artist, and still am an artist- but I work a 45 hour week in a gray cubicle at a computer because I have to live. It wasn't always like this. Everyone I meet (and granted I talk to a lot of other creative types) says the same thing: ya, I have a job... I hate it, but at least I have on.
-and that’s if they do have one.

I am just saying, how much progress can a nation make when there are so many people focusing on just getting by instead of focusing on living?

It is sad from a spiritual over-all in the long run sense. What do you have when no one remembers what they really wanted to do with their lives?

American liberals bitch more than any other group of people on the planet. The fact that you live in america and not liberia or china should be good enough. But no, all day you come to the web-site and demoralize the most prosperous place on the planet. You honestly make it sound like you live on a dollar a day like Obamas brother.

Sadly I have survived layoffs but successfully kept my home. Let's hope that the people who are currently left to drift by the economy fair anywhere near as well.

you all do not get it.

let me explain something to you.

"unemployment rates" reflect and count those
people whom are collecting unemployment benefits.

how many of you have been on unemployment?
    how long does it last?
my experience says less than a year.

once your benefits run out, you drop off the statistics.

    see the point?

the rate is far higher than any statistic you will see
on any media outlet or from any pencil pushing
    statistician.

this problem is far worse than you people that can
afford places to live and computers to bitch on can imagine.

I have talked with family members that are frustrated by the fact that they cannot find a job. I am thankful that my wife and I are working. It is saddening that so many people are searching for work and yet cannot find anything.

  •

I'm part of that 6%. My local publix refuses to hire me despite me being a white, well spoken kid. lol
Really feel sorry for the lower class/ uneducated citizens. The job market BLOWS

I'd say it's not a big deal, but the stats are usually awfully biased towards employment for political purposes and I'm not in a part of the country that was hit that hard.

In any case, I see no need to for alarm. People really are taking this recession shit too seriously, I guess because they're fed up with all the shit that's been happening for the past 8 years.
