"The cultural reasons for not going to the doctor are killing men," says Marianne J. Legato, MD, in a new book called Why Men Die First: How to Lengthen Your Lifespan. The author explains why men's life span in the U.S. lasts an average of six years less than women's.'Males are more fragile and inherently vulnerable than females from birth. And unlike women, who have fought hard to have their specific health needs validated and addressed, men haven't demanded equal treatment.
Men's medical challenges owe a great deal to cultural conditioning. The rules are set shortly after birth, Legato says: Suck up the pain, don't be a wimp, show no weakness, and "man up." Many men only seek medical counsel when under duress from a spouse or when their condition has deteriorated to a severe state.
"Women are able to logically ask for help," says Legato, who has long promoted the concept of gender-specific medicine. "They're hardwired in the brain and very motivated".'

Why Men Die First
I found this so hilarious.... I guess it's semi-true.
Why do men die first?
This is a question that has gone unanswered for centuries...... but, now we know. - 1 year ago

This is no surprise. We are the dumber gender. Men do nothing save prove our stupidity. We drink & drive, all we eat is meat & junkfood, we use guns (for fun?), we lie, cheat, steal, hate, kill, start wars, smoke, treat the fairer sex like bunk, bang our bodies up for sport, and fill our insides with poisons day and night. I'm not saying women don't commit these life-crimes,... but we men sure do self-destruct the most.

Everyone has a fair share in perpetuating this 'suck it up' mentality.
BE A MAN.
That's enough for someone to get what that means and by getting it we have all been conditioned to think that a man will buck up and take it.

I wonder if older women would become homosexual becuase there are less older men around their age to have a relationship with or would they date a younger men.

This claim seems to be a bit outdated. From my point of view mens cultural and social attitude to the whole "manly" imagine has totally changed and instead men are increasingly fair minded. I also think that woman also have a tendency to complain more!

if technology were available to make offspring without males then men would need some sort of value to still be needed right? otherwise we'd be expendable so do men have an intrinsic value or is it merit based?

Men and women compliment each other. Their strengths pick up where the ours drop off. Men teach, interact, react, respond, think, love, fight, inspire, laugh, live in ways that are vital to our existence.
Use the flip side. Is a womans only valuable quality her ability to concieve?

women teach, interact, react, respond, think, love, fight, inspire, laugh, live in ways that are vital to our existence too. What's unique about men? They can impregnate a woman but if there's a way that it can be done without a man then what makes men unique anymore?

The benefit is in the quality of life. Everyone not being the same, thinking the same, feeling the same, acting the same. Isn't your life more fulfilling when others come into it that aren't exactly like you? That stimulate and challenge you.
For example...there are things that a father can give to his children that a mother just can't. Wouldn't those children missing out?

Well, there are other factors that contribute to not seeing a doctor. My boyfriend, for instance, has mildly severe headaches that occur every once in a while. I have asked him to go see a doctor but the problem is, he can't afford to go see one. So, it's not just that some can't go see a doctor, many just can't afford it.

We (the others boys and I in my old neighborhood) used to refuse to cry when we were kids. For example, one time I stepped on a long nail that was sticking out of a board; it went straight through my foot, and it could be felt pushing against the inside of the top of my shoe. I must have been 8 or 9 at the time. I was sucking it up hard while one of the older kids pulled it out. I was congratulated and hailed for not crying; we viewed it as almost being heroic to not cry in such a situation. Another friend of mine did the same when a nail went into his calf.
After the nail was pulled out of my foot, I limped home feeling good about myself. But as soon as I opened the front door of my house and saw my Mom, I just broke down crying. lol I always remember that event whenever I think of machismo BS.

Doctors have close to nothing of an idea about why some people live longer then others, heck they can't even figure out why people yawn. They get so excited when then think they have fond something that they go and tell every one they can without taking a closer look. Then a few years go by and another study determines that the old study was faulty and has no truth to it. Thus proving that you shouldn't always believe what you read and half of what you hear.
As for the actual health thing every ones health is different, that's why there are some people who struggle with weight problems and other people who can eat like a horse and not gain a pound. So there can be no definitive health program that can encompasses every one.

I'd have to read it to be sure, but I'm a little sceptical from the outset. How come men and women are "hardwired" to behave differently, according to her, and yet the reason that men and women have different lifespans isn't similarly "hardwired", rather than being something conditioned?
I'm not denying cultural conditioning, but I'm not sure if it's the predominant cause of men having shorter lifespans.

Children and seniors are surviving cancer at a much higher rate than the 18-55 year old group, because the go to the doctor more often and get more checkups (leading to early detection).

I think diet should be taken into account as well.
More than just the little sentence about proper nutrition.
Men also have the whole meat & potato stereotype to uphold.
Think it's only fair to put some of the blame on consuming animal products. - 1 year ago

I wonder though if the diet we associate with men is more or less just a stereotype or is it really worse than a woman's diet? I know for one I have a bigger sweet tooth for chocolate or ice cream than a lot of guys i know. I don't know that women eat all that healthy these days either.
