The Government is considering to replace the guardsmen's iconic hats with more eco-friendly alternatives.

"Baroness Taylor, the minister for defence procurement, will meet representatives from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) this week to discuss the idea of having the 18-inch helmets, worn by Guards regiments on ceremonial duty at the royal residence, made from synthetical materials.

The Ministry of Defence is said to be open to the idea, provided any alternative can be worn in all weathers. Peta has now enlisted a host of anti-fur fashion designers, including Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood, to create a new helmet.

The bearskins have long been a target of animal rights groups, as a highly visible garment made from the fur of Canadian black bears, whose numbers are falling in the wild."

Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood are just two of the designers who PETA have on standby to design a bear-friendly hat if the MOD gives them the nod.

With one bear having to be killed for each hat made, it does seem like the right thing to do ... but then again, why not just get rid of the hats altogether? They don't seem to have any discernible purpose, other than making one look like a plonker.

It's a matter of tradition, something we Britains are losing very rapidly in a world where political correctness has gone mad! yes I'm backing them up that they should stop killing animals for it, but it seems wrong to throw away hundreds of years of tradition. maybe if instead of getting rid of hunting them, they just managed it more carefully. suits everyone then!

Sorry i no this isn't a very correct thing to say, but isn't taking away those hats like knocking a big chunk out of the British national history.

Could you put the same proposed plan across to the Eskimo that wears animal fur to stay warm.

I'm sorry, but the Guards are an iconic symbol - they're one of those Pavlovian images we foreigners get when we hear mention of Britain.

Do you *really* want ridiculous looking "designers" faffing around with them?

It would be *far* more useful if PETA spent their time trying to get the MOD to run its UK-based vehicles on alternative fuels. Unchecked global warming will kill off *far* more bears than any amount of funny shaped hats.
